Red Dragon Men Narrowly Miss Winning Team Crown at Hamilton Invitational

Tim Rokos finished third in the 200-yard IM and was fourth in two other events
CLINTON, N.Y. – The Cortland men's swimming and diving team narrowly missed capturing the team title at the Hamilton College Invitational Friday and Saturday, falling by only 13 points to champion Oswego.

The Lakers scored 1,427 points to Cortland's 1,414. Rounding out the eight-team field were Oneonta (1,285), Hamilton (1,078), Trinity (Conn.) (1,049.5), Potsdam (817.5), Buffalo State (697) and Sarah Lawrence (523).

Nick Galeto (West Islip) and Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) each recorded victories for the Red Dragons. Galeto won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.53 seconds and Boyko was first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:01.72.

Galeto's win was one of his three top-three individual finishes at the meet. He was runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.95) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.25). Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) contributed three top-four individual showings with a third-place effort in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.15) and fourth-place finishes in the 400-yard individual medley (4:33.49) and 200-yard butterfly (2:06.92).

Patrick Conway (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) finished third in both diving events. He scored 242.45 points on the 1-meter board and 216.50 points in the 3-meter event. Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park) tied for third place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.63) and finished sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.70). Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) also turned in a pair of top-six finishes with a fifth-place time of 17:40.38 in the 1,650-yard freestyle and a sixth-place time of 5:02.83 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Six other Red Dragons posted one top-six individual performance. Thomas Ryan (Long Beach) was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (56.46) and Adam Kirchgessner (West Irondequoit) placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (55.09). Sixth-place finishes came from Noah Farmer (New Hartford) in the 200-yard IM (2:06.56), Eric Kohlhoff (West Islip) in the 50-yard freestyle (22.47), Alex Fisher (Smithtown/Hauppauge) in the 400-yard IM (4:35.74) and Billy Donlevy (Bayside/Holy Cross) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.21).

Galeto led off Cortland's top two relay performances. He teamed with Farmer, Bailey Eigbrett (Avon) and Kohlhoff for a runner-up time of 1:39.61 in the 200-yard medley relay, and he combined with Cornelia, Kirchgessner and Bernhardt for a second-place time of 3:41.70 in the 400-yard medley relay.

The quartet of Galeto, Kohlhoff, Eigbrett and Rokos finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:29.93). Bernhardt, Rokos, Donlevy and Boyko were fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:34.17) and Bernhardt, Galeto, Eigbrett and Kohlhoff finished fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:19.81).

Cortland returns to competition in just more than a month when the Red Dragons travel to Hartwick for a dual meet on Saturday, January 5.
