Red Dragon Women Win Seven Events During Dual-Meet Setback at Ithaca

Kaylee Uhl won the 400-meter dash and anchored the winning 4x200-meter relay
ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland won seven events and earned six other scoring finishes in an 80-47 women's indoor track and field dual-meet loss to host Ithaca College.

Cortland and Ithaca competed in a dual meet for the second straight year. The meet scoring awarded five points for first place, three for second, and one for third in individual events, and only first-place points in relays.

Taylor Hunter (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) played part in 15 of Cortland's 47 points. She won the 60-meter dash in 8.03 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 27.02 seconds, and she led off the winning 4x200-meter relay (1:47.52). Also on that relay unit were Rachel Gutierrez (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), Sofia Housman (Garnerville/North Rockland) and Kaylee Uhl (Waverly).

Maya Campbell (Valley Stream/Valley Stream South) won the 60-meter hurdles (9.49) and was second in the 200-meter dash (27.08). Uhl won the 400-meter dash (1:00.78), Kelly Gardner (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) was the long jump champion (5.21 meters/17' 1.25") and Harley Buczkowski (Holland Patent) earned top points in the weight throw (15.60 meters/51' 2.25").

Housman posted a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash (1:01.85) and Sydney Smith (Niskayuna) placed second in the mile (5:25.13). Three Red Dragons picked up third-place points: Eliza Nichols (Smithtown/Smithtown West) in the mile (5:30.42), Riley Wood (Wallkill) in the triple jump (10.04 meters/32' 11.25"); and Cat Lutjen (Sound Beach/Miller Place) in the shot put (11.32 meters/37' 1.75").

Coach's Corner - Comments from Head Coach Steve Patrick:

First off, I'd like to acknowledge that we are pretty fortunate to have this opportunity to get a quick little meet in with Ithaca.  It's always great to have a second chance to compete before winter break, and the combination of quality competition, a great facility, and a meet that only takes a few hours is fantastic, especially as we start final exams on Monday.  On the women's side in particular we were down a few key performers due to either illness or final exam review sessions taking place during the meet, but that's certainly not a concern for this time of year!  We're thankful that the coaches at Ithaca feel the same way, and that we have the support of our administration to do what is in the best interests of the student-athletes and the program as a whole.

Across the board, nearly everybody on the team hit a season's best or a personal record, so that's quite exciting!  More importantly, we made a lot of progress in terms of executing the skills we are trying to develop.  It's still early in the season, so improving how we do things is still our main priority for us.  Speaking for the coaching staff, we're quite proud with the development and progress we have seen so far, as well as the teamwork and support we have demonstrated for each other.

While our event winners on the day obviously did quite well (especially our short-sprint tandem of Taylor Hunter and Peyton Lalone), a number of folks had great performances that should be mentioned.  I'm going to have to limit myself since we had so many stellar efforts from people!  Noah Serrette ran his fastest time ever on a flat track in the 400 to lead the program, which is very exciting for December!  Bryan Finn had a pretty huge personal best in the shot put, while Kelly Gardner had a great day with a personal best in the 60 and a great long jump.  A lot of our distance crew had good efforts, but we were definitely highlighted on the women's side by Sydney Smith who put down very solid times in both the mile and, with very little recovery from that mile,  in the 800.

I think it's important to acknowledge that we had some great performances for people that haven't been able to practice with us for very long since they were on fall sports teams.  Malley Bowen, who came to us when her volleyball season ended, had a very solid day in the hurdles and the pole vault, while Wendell Brand did some really great work in in the long jump and triple jump after just finishing up with football recently.  We expected that Wendell would adapt quickly since he was with us last year, but are really pleased at how far ahead of schedule he is, and are pretty amazed with how quickly Malley has figured out a lot of the training we do.
