Ten Wins Lead to 10th Win for Cortland Women at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Cortland women's swimming and diving team won 10 individual events in a 173-110 dual win at Fredonia to close out the 2017-18 regular season. The Red Dragons picked up their 10th dual victory of the season for its first double-figure win total in four years.

Marissa Kordal (Eden) won the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.20) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.19), Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) captured the 50-yard freestyle (25.66) and 500-yard freestyle (5:25.86), and Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.40) and 100-yard freestyle (56.16).

Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.14) and was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:44.47), while Rachel Noach (White Plains) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:21.89) and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.09) behind Simpfenderfer. Kalee Walden (Dryden) completed a sweep in the 200 free with a third-place time of 2:08.44.

Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) took top honors in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.82) and Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:04.85). Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) was second in the 1,000 free (12:13.73), Jacqueline Lang (Middletown/Pine Bush) placed second in 1-meter diving (176.65 points), and Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.75).

Cortland opened the meet by claiming the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay. Noach, Szewczyk, Kordal and Davey won in 1:57.11, with Halle King (Auburn/Skaneateles), Vegder, Kanoza and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) second in 2:02.46. The Red Dragons were runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Kanoza, King, Simpfenderfer and Noach finished in 1:48.48.

Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships at Erie Community College in Buffalo Feb. 21-24. The women's 800-yard freestyle relay finals (along with men's 3-meter diving) will be held on the 21st, with the full competition starting on the 22nd.
