Herons Swoop Up Win on Cortand Senior Day, 3-1

CORTLAND, N.Y. –  Three different William Smith players scored a goal as it went on to defeat Cortland 3-1 in Cortland's final game of the season in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons finished their season at 8-15-2, while the Herons improved to 16-5-4.

Junior Charlie Calamari (Barrington, IL/Chicago Fury) netted Cortland's goal, while sophomore Miranda Kolb (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) and junior Samantha Pippin (Allen Park, MI/Team Detroit) each collected an assist. Sophomore goalie Rachael Farmer (Grand Island/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) finished the game with 21 saves.

William Smith started its scoring a little before halfway through the first period, as senior Krista Federow (Niagara Falls, ON/Kent School) received the puck in the slot and sent a shot past Farmer at 7:07. Sophomore Gina Scibetta (Brewerton, NY/Central Square) and junior Stephanie Hampton (Quispamsis, NB/New Hampton School) assisted on the play. Senior goalie Maggie Salmon (Medford, MA/Boston Shamrocks) stopped 31 shots.

The Herons scored two goals in the second period from different players. The first of the two goals was a power-play goal scored by freshman Jules Kennedy (Winthrop, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) with just under 10 minutes remaining in the period. Eight minutes later, the Herons got on the board again with their third goal of the day when senior Kiley Fewster (Fort Meyers, FL/Northfield Mount Hermon) forced a Cortland turnover and sent a high shot past Farmer for her 11th goal of the season.

The Red Dragons scored their lone goal of the game with 6:11 remaining in the third period when Calamari collected a loose puck in front of the net and sent it past Salmon to make it a 3-1 game. The goal was scored on a two-player advantage for Cortland, and set up by a shot on goal from Kolb, which was pushed away by Salmon. Cortland pulled Farmer with 35 seconds remaining but was unable to score any further goals.
