Davey All-SUNYAC in 200 Freestyle at Conference Meet; Team Moves Up to Third Place

Kelly Davey (shown earlier this season) earned All-SUNYAC honors with her third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cortland women's swimming and diving team moved up a spot into third place after the second full day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships, held at Erie Community College's Flickinger Center.

Geneseo leads the field with 668 points, followed by New Paltz (358), Cortland (290), Oneonta (267) and Brockport (220) in the top five out of nine schools competing. The final day of action will begin Saturday at 10 a.m.

Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) earned All-SUNYAC honors with a third-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle. Her time of 1:54.73 missed a school record by less than four tenths of a second. The 200-yard medley relay of Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman), Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland), Marissa Kordal (Eden) and Davey picked up all-league recognition with a third-place time of 1:49.38. Cortland has had three relays thus far earn all-league honors, which go to the top three finishers in each event.

Three Red Dragons posted fifth-place finishes - Szewczyk in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.76), Johnson in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.54), and Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) in the 200 free (1:55.73, 1:55.54 prelims). Also qualifying for the finals were eighth-place finishers Kordal in the 400-yard individual medley (4:46.85, 4:46.04 prelims) and Johnson in the 100-yard butterfly (59.72, 59.67 prelims).

Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) won the "B" final in the 100 back in 1:02.14 for a ninth-place finish. Five other Red Dragons scored points with top-16 showings. Kalee Walden (Dryden) placed 13th in the 100 fly (1:01.91), Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis) was 14th in the 400 IM (4:58.30), and Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) finished 14th in the 100 breast (1:12.24, 1:11.28 prelims).
