Depth Helps Cortland Men Edge Host Oneonta, 153-147

Thomas Ryan won the 100-yard backstroke
ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Cortland men's swimming and diving team relied on great depth within its lineup to post a 153-147 dual-meet victory at Oneonta. The Red Dragons were victorious despite recording wins in just three swimming and two diving events.

Ian Killane (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) earned first-place diving points twice with his performance on the 1-meter board. Oneonta only has a 1-meter board at its facility, so the divers were scored for both a six-dive list and a five-dive list on that board. Killane won the six-dive competition with 277.20 points and the five-dive list with 178.70 points, which equated to an 11-dive score of 455.90 points.

Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.52), and was second in both the 100-yard backstroke (57.30) and 400-yard individual medley (4:29.85). Thomas Ryan (Long Beach) registered a win in the 100-yard backstroke (55.65), and Billy Donlevy (Bayside/Holy Cross) won the 100-yard butterfly (54.99).

Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) and Bailey Eigbrett (Avon) each notched two runner-up finishes. Boyko was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:50.13) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.29), while Eigbrett was second in the 100-yard freestyle (49.98) and 100-yard butterfly (55.72). Cortland swept the top three spots in the 100 fly, with Donlevy and Eigbrett followed by Ryan in third place (58.30).

Also turning in second-place individual finishes were: Brian Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.38); Adam Kirchgessner (West Irondequoit) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.42); Eric Kohlhoff (West Islip) in the 50-yard freestyle (22.86); Kyle Podlaski (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.15); and Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.24).

Cortland took second place in both relays. Ryan, Cornelia, Donlevy and Kohlhoff finished the 200-yard medley relay in 1:42.53, and Donlevy, Luke Rutigliano (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest), Cremer and Eigbrett were timed in 1:31.56 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Cortland concludes its regular-season schedule next Saturday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. with a dual meet at Fredonia.
