Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Cortland pounded out 15 runs on 18 hits, including four hits apiece by Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro), as the Red Dragons defeated host Oswego, 15-7, to earn a split of their SUNYAC-opening doubleheader with the Lakers. Oswego (8-6, 1-1 SUNYAC) won the opener, 2-1, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Cortland (7-9, 1-1 SUNYAC) will host Rochester in a non-league doubleheader Monday at 3 p.m. The twinbill - Cortland's home opener - was originally scheduled for Wednesday but has been moved to Monday due to the upcoming weather forecast.

Oswego 2, Cortland 1

Oswego's Rebecca Vilchez and Cortland's Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) locked horns in a pitching duel as each allowed only one earned run. Vilchez (6-3) allowed five hits and no walks and struck out five over seven innings, while Van Dorn (4-4) gave up four hits and two walks and also struck out five batters in six innings.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the third when Victoria Brown (Fresh Meadows/Archbishop Molloy) singled with one out and scored on Kelly O'Gorman's (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) two-out triple to right. The Red Dragons had a chance to extend their lead in the fourth with runners on first and third with two outs before a groundout ended the inning.

The hosts started their winning rally in the sixth with a Sarah McCullough leadoff walk. Angela Frampton bunted her to second, and Vilchez hit a double to right center to tie the game. Vilchez moved to third on a Jessica Roe infield single and scored on a two-out passed ball. Roe finished the game 2-for-3. Vilchez retired Cortland in order in the seventh to complete the victory.

Cortland 15, Oswego 7

Cortland scored in six of seven innings, including two or more runs five times, to earn the wild victory in the nightcap. Hoyt finished 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored and Schoonmaker was 4-for-5 with a walk, two RBI and four runs. O'Gorman ended 2-for-4 with two walks, an RBI and four runs, Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) and Ericka Sadowski (Liverpool) were each 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, and Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

The Red Dragons grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on Hoyt's three-run homer and Feldman's solo roundtripper. The lead was pushed to 6-1 in the second on RBI singles by Felicello and Sadowski, and Schoonmaker singled in a run in the top of the third to make it a 7-1 game.

Oswego, however, pushed across three runs in the third on a Vilchez sac fly and a Roe two-run double. After neither team scored in the fourth, Cortland plated two runs in the fifth on a Schoonmaker RBI single, along with an error after a lineout to second. The Lakers closed to within 9-7 in the bottom of the fifth when Vilchez hit a two-run double and Roe hit an run-scoring infield single.

Cortland answered with three runs in the sixth to go up 12-7. A two-out wild pitch with the bases loaded scored a run, and Hoyt followed with a two-run double. The Red Dragons closed the scoring in the seventh on an error, a Danielle Olive (Bethpage) RBI fielder's choice, and an O'Gorman RBI single.

Cortland used four pitchers in the contest. Joelle Salisbury (Rotterdam/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) started, and also re-entered briefly, but did not pitch the four total innings necessary to qualify for the win. She allowed seven hits and one walk and struck out four in three and two thirds innings. The victory was awarded to Courtney Kane (Bellport) - her first collegiate win - as she was deemed the "most effective reliever" for the Red Dragons. Kane pitched a scoreless sixth inning with one hit allowed with Cortland up 12-7, compared to Van Dorn pitching a scoreless seventh inning with a larger lead.

Roe started for Oswego and gave up eight hits and six runs, four earned, in two innings. Frampton went the final five innings and gave up nine runs, seven earned. Erin Sweeney led the Lakers' offense with a 3-for-4 effort. Roe was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Vilchez went 1-for-3 with four RBI.
