Cortland Men Win CNY College Challenge

Tyler Hochadel won the shot put and was second in the hammer throw
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Two hurdlers posted top-15 national marks and four triple jumpers set All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) qualifying marks as the Cortland men's track and field team posted 11 regional qualifying performances in total at the CNY College Challenge, hosted by the Red Dragons Tuesday.

Cortland finished first in the team scoring with 95.5 points, followed by Ithaca (45.5), Cobleskill (11) and Oswego (10) using a 5-3-2-1 scoring system for the top four spots in each event.

Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) led the way with his winning triple jump of 14.60 meters (47' 11") and was followed, in order, by C.J. White (Middletown) at 14.23 meters (46' 8.25"), Kwaku Ofosu (Latham/Shaker) at 13.66 meters (44' 9.75"), and Wendell Brand (Sleepy Hollow) at 13.50 meters (44' 3.5"). The four jumpers all had performances worth of an AARTFC qualification.

Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) and Micheal Outing (Farmingdale) each posted national top-15 times in the 110-meter hurdles. Malone won the event in a career-best 14.39 seconds and currently ranks fourth nationally. Outing was third in 14.62 seconds and ranks 15th. Isaiah Brooks (Minoa/East Syracuse Minoa) clocked in at 15.63 seconds for fourth place.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Noah Serrette (Lawrence) finished second in 55.28 seconds, and the margin between third and fourth place, occupied by Austen Johnson (Jamestown) and Adam Perilli (Lockport), was just two hundredths of a second with times of 55.46 and 55.48 seconds, respectively. All three athletes in the full-lap hurdles event achieved the AARTFC standard.

Matt DeLorenzo (Wallkill) tied his career best in the pole vault and had an AARTFC qualifier with his third place jump of 4.50 meters (14' 9"). Ryan Lawless (Commack) was fifth out of 12 in the event at 3.90 meters (12' 9.5"). Dev Williams (Syracuse/Corcoran) finished second out of nine with an AARTFC qualifier in the long jump at 7.17 meters (23' 6.25"). In the high jump, Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) tied for the top spot at 1.82 meters (5' 11.5").

James Forte (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) obtained the final AARTFC qualifier for the team in the 800-meter run, where he finished third out of 16 in 1:56.81. Also in the 800 meters, Ryan Konotopskyj (East Amherst/Williamsville North) finished fourth in 1:57.23 and Nolan Vest (Coram/Longwood) was sixth in 1:58.08.

Coach's Corner - Comments from Cortland Head Coach Steve Patrick:

We were really fortunate with today's weather, and the coaching staff was really proud to see the team come out and take advantage of the opportunity!  Any time you are able to perform at a level that is nearly a guaranteed trip to the NCAA championships it is a great thing, so seeing Storm Malone run that fast in the high hurdles was pretty cool.

Senior Teagan Perry wasn't able to compete in the heptathlon at our home meet last weekend due to an injury, and needed a javelin mark to earn a spot into the conference meet. She hit a big personal best in javelin today, and should be able to represent the Red Dragons next weekend at the SUNY Championships.

For the throws, Bryan Finn came through with a great day – if I'm not mistaken, he had personal bests in all three events (shot put, discus throw, and hammer throw). That's the second time in the last two weeks were one of the 'big men' has had a three for three day!

Our men's 400 hurdlers continued to move in the right direction, with our top three under the 56 second barrier. That's an event that has been very limited in terms of training opportunities, so it was pretty great to see those kind of performances.

Our sprints made some really great progress today. Jesse Correale and Asia Cornwall had really nice 400s, as did Ricky Castello and Connor Lewis. Liam Joyce had a great day in the 100 and 200, and Payton Lalone had a great return from a hamstring injury. The star of the day might have been sophomore Kelly Gardner, however. She opened the day with a strong 4x100 relay leg, and then moved on to a huge PR in the 100 of 12.55 seconds. Because she was running so well, we put her into the 200 at the last minute, and she simply flew! Her time of 25.50 seconds is currently the fastest in the conference and within the top 50 in the country!
