Dev Williams takes one of his long jump attempts at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
La CROSSE, WIS. - Cortland senior
Dev Williams (Syracuse/Corcoran) finished in 11th place out of 20 competitors in the long jump during Day 1 of the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day event is being hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Williams posted a distance of 7.13 meters (23' 4.75"). The result came on his first of three attempts, with his next two tries covering 6.98 and 6.78 meters. Williams actually tied for the 10th-best distance along with Stevenson University's Dimeon Wright, with Wright earning 10th place due to having the longest second-best jump.
Williams missed advancing to the finals by just two places. The top nine after three jumps earned three more attempts, with Nebraska Wesleyan's Malik Norris in ninth after three rounds at 7.16 meters. Montclair State's George Alexandris won the national title with a Division III championship record distance of 7.92 meters (26' 0").
"It was great to see Devlen get all three jumps in, but it's frustrating for him to be only three centimeters out of the finals," said head coach
Steve Patrick. "Of course, moving up from 20th in the country (last spring) to 11th is a great achievement for the final meet of his career. He leaves us as a four-time NCAA championships competitor and a school record holder!"
Williams qualified for nationals in the long jump during both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2017 and 2018. He was 14th nationally indoors each of the last two years. A transfer from Onondaga Community College, Williams set the Cortland outdoor long jump record at 7.44 meters (24' 5") at the 2017 SUNYAC Championships and the school indoor long jump record at 7.25 meters (23' 9.5") at the SUNYAC Championships this past February.
Cortland juniors
Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) and
Micheal Outing (Farmingdale) will compete in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles on Friday at 3:10 p.m. (Central).
