Storm Malone All-American in 110m Hurdles as NCAA Outdoor Championship Concludes

Storm Malone competes in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles. Malone finished eighth to earn All-America honors for the first time outdoors and the third time overall.
La CROSSE, WIS. - Cortland junior Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles during the final day of the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day event was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Also for the Red Dragons Saturday, senior Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) finished in 14th place out of 20 competitors in the triple jump.

Malone crossed the finish line eighth out of nine competitors in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.76 seconds. Malone and Wesley's Roland Attoh-Okine each actually were clocked at 14.76 seconds, but when the times were broken down to three decimal places Attoh-Okine finished at 14.751 seconds for seventh place to Malone's 14.754 seconds. Mount Union's Mason Plant won the title in 14.22 seconds, just nipping Cody Hall of Trinity (Texas) (14.23) and Rowan's Bobby Cooks (14.24).

Malone is an All-American for the first time outdoors and the third time overall. He finished 11th in the 110-meter hurdles at last year's outdoor meet, and he placed fifth indoors in the 60-meter hurdles this past winter and eighth indoors in 2017. The top eight finishers in each event are All-Americans.

Jones finished 14th in the triple jump with a distance of 14.42 meters (47' 3.75"). After fouling on his first attempt, Jones posted a distance of 13.97 meters on his second attempt and hit his best mark of the day on his third try. He was not among the top nine to advance to the finals and three more attempts. Luther Newburn of Benedictine won the national title with an effort of 15.89 meters (52' 1.75"), which he accomplished on his first attempt.

Jones was competing at an NCAA championship for the sixth time in his Cortland career. He was an All-America in the triple jump during this past winter's indoor championship with a seventh-place finish, and he finished 10th in the event outdoors last spring.

Malone's finish earned one team point for the Red Dragons, who tied for 82nd place in the final team standings out of 147 competing schools. Mount Union won the national team crown with 36 points, one point better than North Central (Ill.).

"Both of our events today were some of the stranger things I've seen as a coach," commented Cortland 11th-year mentor Steve Patrick. "Storm had a really nice effort early but certainly ran into issues later in the race - literally he hit hurdle 6 quite hard. The high hurdles are one of the hardest races to perform consistently in for just that reason, so seeing him earn All-American again is a tremendous achievement!

"The men's triple jump was probably the most competitive event at the meet. During most years Dawan's jump would be in finals, at least, but this one was pretty amazing. He certainly competed quite well today and has had quite an impressive career as a Red Dragon: a multiple conference champion, a frequent all-conference performer, a six-time NCAA qualifier, in our top five all-time lists for the triple jump both indoors and outdoors, and an All-American in the triple jump from the 2018 indoor season!"
