Big Sixth Inning Lifts Cortland Past Plattsburgh, 7-2, to Start SUNYAC Tournament

GENESEO, N.Y – Tori Scharff's (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) go-ahead two-run double highlighted a seven-run sixth inning as second-seeded Cortland defeated fifth-seeded Plattsburgh, 7-2, during Day 1 of the SUNYAC Softball Tournament.

Cortland (20-17) reached the 20-win mark for the 22nd consecutive season. The Red Dragons will play Friday at 11 a.m. versus Oneonta. The six-team, double-elimination tournament is being hosted by Geneseo.

Cortland trailed 2-0 after five and a half innings and was held to one hit over that span before exploding in the bottom of the sixth. Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) drew walks and Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) singled through the left side to drive in a run and, following a fielder's force at home, Scharff hit a double to left to drive in two and put Cortland up 3-2.

Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-2. Another run scored later in the inning on a misplayed liner, and O'Gorman finished the rally with an RBI single through the right side.

Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) tossed a three-hitter for her 12th win of the season. She allowed two runs, one earned, with three strikeouts and three walks. Plattsburgh's Katie Pitkin went five innings, plus four batters in the sixth, and gave up four runs on two hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Taylor Smith finished out the sixth inning in the circle for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh (18-18) took a 1-0 lead in the fifth. Kelsey Gage walked, was bunted to second by Felicia Torres, and scored on an Anna Fisher single through the left side. The Cardinals added a run in the sixth. Shannon Myles struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. Jennifer Groat bunted for a single, and the runners moved up on a groundout. Amanda Tantillo drove in the run with a groundout to second.

O'Gorman finished 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored, while Scharff and Cuttita each were 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBI and a run for the Red Dragons. Groat, Fisher and Kaitlyn Preiss each finished 1-for-3 for Plattsburgh.
