GENESEO, N.Y – Oneonta scored three times in the top of the sixth to rally past Cortland, 4-3, during Day 2 of the SUNYAC Softball Tournament.
Second-seeded Cortland (20-18) then played Plattsburgh in an elimination game and was leading 3-1 while batting in the bottom of the sixth inning before rain halted the game. Third-seeded Oneonta and top-seeded Geneseo will play their winner's bracket final Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by the resumption of the Cortland-Plattsburgh game at 11 a.m. If Cortland holds on for the win, the Red Dragons will still need to win three more games - two Saturday and one Sunday - in order to claim their fourth straight league title.
Cortland took a 2-0 lead versus Oneonta in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by
Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and an RBI fielder's choice by
Taylor Felicello (Marlboro). Oneonta put up a run in the second on a Caroline Koch single, an error and an Amanda Sexton RBI groundout, but Cortland took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third when
Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) led off with a walk and pinch runner Hailey Muehlbauer (Williamsville/Williamsville South) eventually scored on an
Ericka Sadowski (Liverpool) sacrifice fly.
The game remained 3-1 until the sixth when Oneonta scored three runs without the benefit of a hit. Oneonta scored its first run on a walk, a groundout and an error, its second on a Bailey Schwark bases-loaded walk, and the go-ahead run on an error during an attempt to throw a runner out at home on a potential force play.
Cortland mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth with singles by
Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) and
Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) and an O'Gorman walk. Oneonta pitcher Julia Calabro, however, induced a foulout to first to end the threat. In the seventh, Feldman drew a leadoff walk that led eventually to a runner on third with two outs following a sac bunt and a groundout before a pop-up ended the game.
Calabro relieved starter Alyssa Bluethgen after the first four Cortland batters reached off of her in the first. Calabro finished with five hits and one run allowed over seven innings with two strikeouts and five walks.
Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) gave up five hits and four unearned runs with three walks in six and a third innings.
Schoonmaker led Cortland at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. Caputo finished 2-for-3, O'Gorman was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI, and Feldman walked twice. Koch was 2-for-2 with a walk and Dana Del Genio went 2-for-3 with a walk to pace Oneonta (21-13).
