GENESEO, N.Y. - The Cortland men's outdoor track and field team recorded four individual titles and a total of 16 All-SUNYAC performances on the way to finishing second at the SUNYAC Championship Meet, hosted by Geneseo Friday and Saturday.

Geneseo earned the team title with 208.16 points. Cortland finished with 189 points, followed by Brockport with 140.33 and Buffalo State at 92.5. Rounding out the field of nine were Oneonta (89), Fredonia (48), Oswego (34), Plattsburgh (17), and Potsdam (1).

Every Cortland athlete or relay team, minus one, that placed in the top four in their respective events achieved All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) qualifying performances. Four results that placed outside the top four alsomet the qualifying standard, as the Red Dragons posted a total of 22 throughout the meet.

Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) won the 110-meter hurdles for the second straight year with a winning time of 14.29 seconds, which currently ranks third nationally in Division III. Malone set the school record in the event at last year's conference championship meet with a time of 14.24 seconds.

Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter), who ranks seventh nationally in the triple jump, improved upon his 2017 second-place league finish and won the event with a jump of 14.44 meters (47' 4.5"). He led the Red Dragons' top-four sweep in the event. with C.J. White (Middletown) in second (13.32 meters/46' 11.75"), Wendell Brand (Sleepy Hollow) in third (13.90 meters/45' 7.25"), and Kwaku Ofosu (Latham/Shaker) in fourth (13.90 meters/45' 7.25", but with a shorter second-best jump than Brand) as Cortland scored 29 team points in the event.

Noah Serrette (Lawrence) repeated as the 400-meter hurdles champion in 54.73 seconds, and Zach Kashmer (Chili/Churchville-Chili) led the Cortland fleet in the decathlon, winning the two-day event with 6,111 points.

Kashmer was one of five Cortland decathletes to place in the top eight, including a sweep of the top three spots. Isiah Brooks (Minoa/East Syracuse Minoa) followed Kashmer with 5,783 points and Kellen Martin (Salamanca/Cattaraugus-Little Valley) rounded out the top three at 5,483 points. Kevin Diaz Lopez (Haverstraw/North Rockland) was sixth (4,889) and Jesse Haynes (Hampton Bays) placed eighth (4.780). Cortland finished with 28 team points in the decathlon.

Along with White and Brooks, two other Red Dragons recorded runner-up finishes: Micheal Outing (Farmingdale) in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.68 seconds and Dev Williams (Syracuse/Corcoran) in the long jump (7.16 meters/23' 6").

Jones was also third in the long jump at 6.99 meters (22' 11.25"). Easton Reagan (Schenectady/Schalmont) was third in the 400-meter dash (49.19), Austen Johnson (Jamestown) placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (55.26) and Grant Boyd (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:38.29). Other third-place finishers included Tyler Hochadel (Hamburg/Frontier) in the hammer throw (48.22 meters/158' 2") and the 4x400-meter relay of Serrette, Adam Perilli (Lockport), Connor Lewis (Glen Ridge) and Johnson (3:20.43).

League champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference, and third-place finishers are third team. This is the first season in which third-place finishers are being recognized as All-SUNYAC performers.

Cortland is scheduled to send competitors to various "last chance" meets next week and the AARTFC Championships Wednesday and Thursday, May 16-17, at Brockport.

Coach's Corner - Comments from Head Coach Steve Patrick on the SUNYAC men's and women's championships:

It was great to see the women's program take such a big step forward as compared to the indoor championships in terms of team finish. We entered the 4x400 in 5th place as a team, with the potential to move up into 4th or slide back into 6th place. It was great to see those four ladies (Asia Cornwall, Shannon Imbornoni, Kaylee Uhl, and Missy Emilio) fight for every second, and ensure us being in fourth place! I would like to highlight Sam Himes for the women's squad, who worked herself into a scoring position for in the women's 10,000 meters, which is pretty amazing considering that it was her first time competing in that event!  Sam's teammate Maya Campbell had a great weekend, getting under the 15-second barrier in the 100 high hurdles.

The men's team put together a really nice meet that we are quite proud of! Of the 21 events contested, we scored in 20 of them, which is a great indication of the balance in our program right now. Most other years our point total would be a winning score so we are pretty pleased with how things went. Some obvious highlights for our program today include sweeping the All-Conference spots in the decathlon (Zach Kashmer, Isaiah Brown, and Kellen Martin) and sweeping the All-Conference spots in the triple jump (Dawan Jones, C.J. White, and Wendell Brand, along with Kwaku Ofosu earning 4th). Considering how few of our scorers were seniors – only 25 ½ of our points came from seniors in the program – we are really excited for what the future can hold for us!
