Volleyball SUNYAC Play Starts With Four-Set Loss to Visiting Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland opened SUNYAC women's volleyball play with a four-set loss to visiting Fredonia at Corey Gymnasium. The Blue Devils won the opening set, 25-16, but Cortland answered with a 25-23 win in the second. Fredonia claimed the final two sets, 25-17 and 25-16.

League play continues Saturday with two matches for each of the six teams competing in Cortland. Friday's other results included 3-0 wins by Brockport versus Plattsburgh and by New Paltz over Buffalo State. Cortland will face Plattsburgh Saturday at noon and New Paltz at 5 p.m. The remaining six league matches for the Red Dragons will included three in Buffalo Oct. 5-6 and three in Brockport Oct. 19-20.

Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) and Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) led Cortland with nine kills apiece. Moran finished with a .286 attack percentage. Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) totaled six kills with just one error in 12 attempts for a .417 attack percentage.

Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) led the Red Dragons (4-8, 0-1 SUNYAC) with 29 assists and 13 digs. Gabby Fernandes (Islip) added 10 digs and Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) served three aces.

Kailey Falk paced Fredonia with 14 kills and five aces and SallyAnne Rudny finished with 12 kills and nine digs. Amanda Mosack dished out 40 assists and added 13 digs and four aces, while Rachel Aiello posted a team-high 16 digs.

Cortland was within 16-14 in the first set before Fredonia scored five straight points to take control. The Red Dragons led 15-8 in the second set before the Blue Devils came back and took a 17-16 lead. Cortland responded with a 6-1 run to go up 22-18, then held on after its lead shrank to 23-22. Moore's kill eventually ended the set.

Fredonia led 9-5 early in the third set and held at least a four-point lead the rest of the way. In the fourth set, the Blue Devils used a 5-0 run to push a 19-15 lead to 24-15 on the way to the clinching win.
