CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Junior
Jake Keller (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season to lead the nationally 15th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team to a decisive 4-0 victory versus Oswego Saturday afternoon in a SUNYAC conference matchup. The Red Dragons improved to 6-0-2 with the win, and the Lakers fell to 3-3-1. The Red Dragons secured their first SUNYAC win, while the Lakers begin their conference play with an 0-1 record.
Senior
Leke Dossou (Hamburg, Germany/Otto-Hahn) assisted on both of Keller's goals. Dossou also scored a goal of his own at 11:03 in the first half, a goal which was assisted by Keller. Junior goalie
Sean Kelly (Coram/Newfield) turned aside six shots, giving the veteran goalkeeper his fifth shutout of the season for the Red Dragons. Sophomore goalie Brian Terra (Lake Grove/Sachem North) registered five saves for Oswego in the losing effort.
The Lakers were seemingly outplayed and out possessed throughout the entirety of the game, as the Red Dragons dominated on the offensive side of the ball. Oswego did see a great scoring opportunity at 11:46 in the first half, when Caleb Asamoah (Accra, Ghana/Briarcliff) was fouled inside of the 18-yard box, giving the Lakers a penalty kick opportunity. Asamoah hit a strike to the left side of the goal, which was saved by Kelly and cleared away by a Cortland defender, ending the Lakers' scoring opportunity.
Cortland's first chance of the game came very early in the game when Keller rocketed a shot from eight yards out that Terra saved. Just ten minutes later, Cortland got on the board for the first time when Dossou received a pass from Keller and floated a ball over Terra's hands. Just six minutes later, Cortland scored its second goal of the game when
Nevin Nambiar (New Hyde Park/Herricks) tallied his first goal of the season after a deflection off an Oswego defender fell right to Nambiar, who sent the ball into the back of the goal. Keller rounded out Cortland's first half scoring with a 15-yard strike at 34:23 on a pass from Dossou that got past the outstretched Terra for the Red Dragons third goal of the half.
The story was more of the same in the second half, as the Red Dragons and Keller quickly got back to their scoring ways. After a nice series of give-and-go passes between Keller and Dossou, Terra had no choice but to come off his line, which led to Keller's second goal of the day. Oswego attempted to generate offensive attacks, but found no success due to Cortland's stifling defense. Despite the Lakers' pressure, the Red Dragons held strong and came away with the 4-0 shutout victory.
