CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) scored twice and added an assist to lead the Cortland field hockey team to a 3-0 SUNYAC victory versus Oswego Wednesday afternoon in windy and rainy conditions. The Red Dragons improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Lakers dropped to 4-3 and 1-1.
Junior
Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) also tallied a goal for Cortland, and senior
Shannon McGuinness (Carle Place) recorded her first two assists of the season.
Senior goalie
Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made one save for the Red Dragons. Sophomore goalie Joanna Christman (Rochester/Eastridge) turned aside eight shots for Oswego, while junior Riley Mallett (Suffern) registered a defensive save.
Gibaldi notched the game-winning goal 30 seconds before halftime, knocking a shot inside the right post off a short pass from McGuinness after a Cortland penalty corner. The goal came just over four minutes after Mallett made her defensive save to keep the scoreless at the time.
Gibaldi struck again 2:02 into the second half off another McGuinness assist, one-timing a shot in close after a scramble in front. Burchell made it a 3-0 game at 40:45 with a long blast from straight on a penalty corner. Three minutes after Burchell's goal, Oswego pressured Cortland, earning three penalty corners and getting off three shots, but two of the shots were blocked and the third was denied by Reinoehl to preserve the shutout.
