Red Dragons Beat Morrisville in Four Sets to Open Cortland Invitational

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) recorded team highs of 18 kills and seven blocks as Cortland outlasted Morrisville St. in four sets - 25-18, 26-24, 28-30, 25-15 - to open action at the Cortland Invitational.

The Red Dragons (6-10) will close the four-team, round-robin tournament Saturday with matches versus RIT at 11 a.m. and Wilkes at 1:30 p.m. RIT defeated Wilkes in four sets in Friday's other match.

Moore hit at a .283 clip with 18 kills and five errors in 46 attempts. She had six block assists and one solo block, and she also served two aces. Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) ended with 11 kills and two errors in 23 swings for a .391 attack percentage. Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) added 10 kills.

Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) amassed 38 assists and 14 digs and Malley Bowen (Owego/Tioga Central) led the squad with 15 digs and also dished out six assists. Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) finished with five block assists and six kills.

Morrisville (11-4) was paced by Helena Hanes with 15 kills and five blocks and Kirsten Florio with 11 kills. Kim Dunkleman finished with 29 assists and 13 digs and Sam Wolf led the Mustangs with 21 digs.

The first set was tied 15-15 before a four-point Cortland run, including kills by Van Pelt and Moore and a combined block by Moran and Moore. The Red Dragons led by at least three the rest of the set.

Cortland trailed 22-19 in the second set after a Florio kill, but rallied to score the next five points. The run started with two Moran kills, sandwiched around a Moore ace, followed by two Morrisville attack errors. The Mustangs, however, tied the set at 24-24 on a Margaret Kianka kill and a Cortland error. The Red Dragons won the set after two Morrisville errors.

The wild third set was tied 13 times, and neither team held a lead of more than three points. Down 24-22, Cortland tied the score at 24-24 on a Van Pelt kill and a block by Rachael Colombo (Wallkill) and Moran. Morrisville had four more set points, but each time from 25-25 to 28-28 Cortland was able to tie things back up. Morrisville finally grabbed the victory after two Florio kills.

Cortland grabbed early control of the fourth set with an opening 9-2 run. The Red Dragons led 11-3 after a Moore kill and a Morrisville error and held at least a seven-point lead the rest of the way.
