Cortland Competes at University of Maryland Quad Meet

Rachel Filipski was Cortland's top finisher on vault and second on the team on floor
COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The Cortland women's gymnastics team traveled to the University of Maryland for a quad meet with the host Terrapins and the University Pennsylvania, both Division I squads, along with Division II West Chester University.
 
Maryland won the meet with a score of 193.85. West Chester was runner-up was second at 190.65, Penn finished third at 190.55 and Cortland was fourth at 183.45, a half point higher than its season-opening score this past Tuesday.
 
Emma Schulz (Poughquag/Arlington) was Cortland's top finisher in two events. She tied for seventh place out of 24 on balance beam with a 9.675 and was 11th on floor exercise with a 9.625. Rachel Filipski (Lancaster) tied for eighth on vault with a 9.625 and Megan Hanley (Lynbrook/Malverne) tied for 11th on uneven bars with a 9.45.
 
Emily Speciale (San Antonio, TX/James Madison) finished 13th on bars with a career-best 9.35. Hanley tied for 14th on beam (9.50), Filipski was 15th on floor (9.45) and Sidney McConnell (Winchester, CA/Vista Murrieta) was 15th on vault (9.45). Hanley was one of three all-around competitors at the meet and finished with a 36.975, almost three tenths of a point better than her performance last Tuesday versus Brockport.
 
Maryland's Alecia Farina won floor exercise (9.75) and tied with her teammate Emilie Leblanc for first on bars (9.875). Collea Burgess also won an event for the Terrapins with a 9.775 on vault, and Penn's Caroline Moore was the bars champion with a 9.875.
 
Cortland will travel to Air Force Academy in Colorado for a tri-meet with the Falcons and West Virginia, both Division I programs, on Saturday, Jan. 19. Cortland first-year head coach Sierra Day is the daughter of Air Force head coach Doug Day and was a volunteer assistant coach for the Falcons during the 2016-17 season before taking the position as an assistant coach at Cortland last winter.
