Cortland Edges Host Delaware Valley, 24-22

DOYLESTOWN, PA. – Cortland used two pins and two forfeit wins to earn a 24-22 dual-match victory at Delaware Valley University. The Red Dragons evened their record at 5-5 with the win while the host Aggies dropped to 1-3.

Cortland led 6-0 after a Rick Chastine (Endicott/Union-Endicott) forfeit win at 125 pounds. The hosts won the next two matches, including a 7-5 overtime decision by Russel Benson over Matt Maquet (Long Beach) at 133 pounds as well as a major decision by Rob Duxbury at 141 pounds, to take a 7-6 lead.

The Red Dragons picked up six points in each of the next three matches to go up 24-7. C.J. Labate (Commack) won by forfeit at 149, Zack Zupan (Canastota) pinned his opponent in 2:20 at 157, and Charlie Spada (Long Beach) won by pin in 4:23 at 165.

Cortland then held on as the Aggies won the final four matches. Kyle Hillermeier beat Charlie Buckley (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) in overtime, 5-3, at 174, followed by decisions from Kyler Hillermeier at 174, Anthony Costanza at 184 and Steve Horvath at 197. Those outcomes, however, still left Delaware Valley trailing 24-16 prior to Oscar Daniels' pin at 285 to end the evening.

Cortland will compete in a dual at Nassau County Community College Saturday at noon.
