BOSTON, MASS. – Junior goalie
Nick Modica (Suffern/New Jersey Hitmen) tied his career high with 46 saves, and freshman
Mike Sciore (Syracuse/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored the game-winning goal early in the third period as the Cortland men's hockey team defeated Bryn Athyn, 2-1, Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 54th Annual Codfish Bowl hosted by UMass Boston.
The Red Dragons improved to 5-8 on the season and advanced to the championship game against the host Beacons, who skated past Tufts, 3-1, in the first game of the day. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday. UMass Boston is currently ranked eighth nationally in the USCHO Div. III poll. The Lions dropped to 4-11 and play the Jumbos in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
Junior
Alex Storjohann (Phoenix, AZ/Kirkland Lake) netted Cortland's first goal of the game. Junior
Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals), senior
Mike Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) and freshman
Ian Keller (East Meadow/New York PAL Islanders) each collected an assist.
Jake Heckenberger tallied Bryn Athyn's goal with Sheldon Brett assisting on the score. Goalie McKenzie Chalmers registered 17 saves.
Heckenberger gave the Lions a 1-0 lead at 14:56 of the first period, as Bryn Athyn controlled much of the play, earning a 16-3 advantage in shots. Storjohann tied the game with his sixth goal of the season just past the midway point of the second period.
Sciore netted the game-winner just 1:19 into the third period off an assist from Crowley. From that point, the Red Dragons held onto the lead with Modica turning aside all 16 shots he faced over the final 20 minutes, including back-to-back stops on a shot from the left circle and a rebound right in front with just under 1:30 remaining to play. After a Bryn Athyn timeout, the Lions pulled Chalmers for an extra skater and earned a power play with 44 seconds remaining but despite having a two-man advantage on the ice could not get a shot on goal as Cortland held on for the 2-1 victory.
