COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The Cortland wrestling team finished with a 3-1 record, including a victory over nationally 19th-ranked Stevens Institute, at the North/South Duals, hosted by Ursinus College. The Red Dragons opened with a 19-18 loss to Division II Shippensburg, but bounced back to defeat Camden County College (53-0), Stevens (25-20) and the host Bears (23-14).
Four Red Dragon wrestlers finished the day with three wins apiece over the four dual matches. Freshman
Demitreus Henry (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) was 3-0 with a pin and a technical fall at 165 and 174 pounds. Sophomore
Ryan O'Shea (Levittown/MacArthur) finished 3-0 at 197 pounds, junior
Ben Lloyd (Woodbridge, VA/Forest Park) was 3-1 at 125 and 133 pounds, and senior
Alex D'Angelo (Thiells/North Rockland) went 3-1 with a major decision at 141 pounds.
Two other Red Dragons earned multiple victories. Sophomore
Matt Maquet (Long Beach) was 2-1 with a major decision at 133 pounds and sophomore
Jeremy Pond (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) finished 2-2 with a pin at 149 pounds.
Cortland opened with a 12-0 lead over Shippensburg after a Lloyd forfeit win and decisions by Maquet and D'Angelo. Shippensburg won the next four matches, but the Red Dragons answered with decisions by
J.P. Puca (Huntington) at 184 and O'Shea at 197 to go up 18-13. The Raiders, however, recorded a pin in the final match to pull out the 19-18 victory.
Cortland's 53-0 win over Camden County featured a pin by
Charlie Buckley (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) at 174 pounds, a 16-1 technical fall by Henry at 165, decisions by Lloyd at 133 and
Matt Norris (Homer) at 157, and six forfeit victories.
In the match against nationally ranked Stevens, Cortland trailed 17-3 after five bouts. Lloyd won 7-4 at 125 before the Ducks earned four straight wins. The Red Dragons clawed back with a 17-9 major decision by
Charlie Spada (Long Beach) at 165 and a pin by Henry at 174 to cut the Stevens lead to 17-13. Stevens won at 184 to go up 20-13, but Cortland drew within one on
Dylan Dubuque's (East Greenbush/Columbia) pin at 197 and earned a forfeit win by
Zach Herbert (Sparta, NJ) at 285 to claim the team victory.
Cortland took control early versus Ursinus with wins in five of the first six matches. Maquet and D'Angelo recorded major decisions at 133 and 141, respectively, and Pond pinned his opponent at 149.
Gianno Silba (Newark Valley) and Henry won by decisions at 165 and 174 to give the Red Dragons a 20-4 lead. Ursinus won the next two bouts to close to within 20-11, but O'Shea sealed the win with a 3-1 decision at 197.
Cortland will compete at the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa., next Friday and Saturday.
