BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland secured a berth into the SUNYAC women's volleyball playoffs with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 victory at Buffalo State.
The Red Dragons are 22-7 overall and 6-1 in SUNYAC play, and they are guaranteed a top-six finish in the league for a spot in the conference tournament. Cortland currently sits in second place, one game behind Geneseo (7-0) and one game ahead of both Brockport and Oswego (each 5-2).
Cortland wraps the league regular season at home next Friday and Saturday versus Geneseo and Brockport. The first-place finisher will host the league semifinals and finals Nov. 8-9. The second-place team earns a bye into the semifinals, and the third-place and fourth-place teams will host quarterfinal matches Nov. 5.
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) finished with 10 kills and 12 digs and
Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) had nine kills and three blocks against the Bengals. Moran committed just one attack error in 17 attempts for a .471 attack percentage.
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) chipped in with six kills and two blocks and
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) had five kills.
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) led the Red Dragons with seven blocks, two solo, and
Cat Mangogna (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) finished with four kills and four blocks. Also for the Red Dragons,
Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) served four aces and added eight digs,
Carly Haegele (Commack) led the team with 18 digs, and
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) totaled 18 assists and eight digs.
Buffalo State (6-14, 0-7 SUNYAC) was led by Kayla Wolinski's 11 kills and .320 attack percentage. Eimile O'Brien had nine kills and 19 digs and Brooke Federko amassed 26 assists.
Cortland led 15-14 in the first set before going on a 8-2 run, led by two kills each from Southcott and Moran, to take a 23-16 lead en route to the 25-18 win. The Red Dragons fell behind 11-4 in the second set, but surged back to eventually tie the set at 14. The teams were tied at every interval from 14-14 to 21-21 before Cortland scored the final four points, two on combined blocks by Anderson and Mangogna.
Buffalo State led 18-17 in the third set after a Bryanna Fisher block, but Cortland rattled off seven straight points to take control. Van Pelt had two kills during that stretch. The Bengals broke the run on a Cortland attack error before the Red Dragons tallied the match-clinching point on an Amelio kill.
