Junior Sam Himes earned all-region honors.
CANTON, N.Y. – Junior
Sam Himes (Amherst/Sweet Home) earned all-region honors with a 33rd-place finish at the NCAA Div. III Atlantic Regional hosted by St. Lawrence. The Red Dragons finished 15th as a team with 428 points.
Geneseo won the team title with 68 points. RPI (83 points), Ithaca (102 points), Rochester (122 points) and Vassar (168 points) rounded out the top five. Thirty-eight teams in all competed.
Himes covered the 6,000-meter course in 23:26.4. Parlay Hannan of Ithaca edged Geneseo's Genny Corcoran to capture the individual title. Hannan crossed the finish line in 21:01.2 followed closely by Corcoran in 21:06.8. A total of 274 runners competed in the race.
Freshman
McKenzie Dombroski (Chittenango) was Cortland's second scorer, finishing 87th in 24:43.1. Sophomore
Madison Ciuffetelli (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) crossed the finish line in 94th place (24:48.3). Senior
Courtney Maurin (Pine Bush) finished 100th in 24:54.9, and senior
Jill Leggiero (East Greenbush/Columbia) rounded out the Red Dragons' scorers in 118th place (25:14.5).
Junior
Cat Zamroz (Levittown/Island Trees) finished 125th in 25:21.5, while freshman
Sera King (Oceanside) turned in a time of 25:48.7 to finish 147th.

Coach's Corner - Comments from Cortland Head Coach Steve Patrick:
The work that the grounds crew and coaching staff at St. Lawrence did to have this course in really good shape was pretty remarkable, and should be commended! Their efforts made for a great experience for the teams competing today. We should also thank the family, friends, alumni, and current team members that made the trip up North to support the team!
It's great to finish the year with runners earning All-Regional recognition on both sides, with strong finishes from senior Cabel McCandless for the men and junior Sam Himes for the women. Neither was in an all-regional position until the very end of the race, meaning that they both did a great job of fighting their way up through the field to earn those honors.
We definitely made some mistakes as a program today where we weren't out where we needed to be during the first part of the race, and that definitely impacted our overall team scores. We generally fought hard during the races – how much we moved up in the field proves that – but just left a little too much ground to cover on the day.
We've definitely had a good year in terms of making progress toward where the program should be, which is exciting! We have a lot of younger folks that have made strong contributions this year, and a lot more that are learning and improving.
I'd be remiss to not thank our seniors who we are certainly going to miss! For the men Chad Dunham, Cabel McCandless and Nolan Vest all ran their last race today; Ryan Konotopskyj was here cheering today but unfortunately had his season cut short due to injury. Jill Leggiero and Courtney Maurin closed out their cross country careers today; for Jill, this was her final collegiate competition as she is graduating early, which is certainly quite an accomplishment! We thank these folks for their effort, commitment and leadership over the years!
