Coach's Corner - Comments from Cortland Head Coach Steve Patrick:
The work that the grounds crew and coaching staff at St. Lawrence did to have this course in really good shape was pretty remarkable, and should be commended! Their efforts made for a great experience for the teams competing today. We should also thank the family, friends, alumni, and current team members that made the trip up North to support the team!
It's great to finish the year with runners earning All-Regional recognition on both sides, with strong finishes from senior Cabel McCandless for the men and junior Sam Himes for the women. Neither was in an all-regional position until the very end of the race, meaning that they both did a great job of fighting their way up through the field to earn those honors.
We definitely made some mistakes as a program today where we weren't out where we needed to be during the first part of the race, and that definitely impacted our overall team scores. We generally fought hard during the races – how much we moved up in the field proves that – but just left a little too much ground to cover on the day.
We've definitely had a good year in terms of making progress toward where the program should be, which is exciting! We have a lot of younger folks that have made strong contributions this year, and a lot more that are learning and improving.
I'd be remiss to not thank our seniors who we are certainly going to miss! For the men Chad Dunham, Cabel McCandless and Nolan Vest all ran their last race today; Ryan Konotopskyj was here cheering today but unfortunately had his season cut short due to injury. Jill Leggiero and Courtney Maurin closed out their cross country careers today; for Jill, this was her final collegiate competition as she is graduating early, which is certainly quite an accomplishment! We thank these folks for their effort, commitment and leadership over the years!
