GENESEO, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball season came to a close with a hard-fought, four-set loss to Brockport in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals at Geneseo's Schrader Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles won 27-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20.
The Red Dragons, seeded third in the tournament, finish the year with a 24-11 record. They were making their first SUNYAC semifinal appearance since 2015. Brockport, the second seed, improved to 18-10 and will face either Geneseo or Oneonta in Saturday's championship match.
Maya Owens (Nyack) led Cortland with a career-high 17 kills.
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) added seven kills and 19 digs.
Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) finished with six kills and a team-high five blocks and
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) also put down six kills.

Carly Haegele (Commack) shared the team lead with Southcott with 19 digs.
Malley Bowen (Tioga/Tioga Central) had 23 assists, two aces and six digs,
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) registered 15 assists, two aces and six digs, and
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) chipped in with 11 digs and three blocks.
Meaghan Mastro finished with 15 kills, five blocks and 11 digs and Andrea Coyle had 13 kills for the Golden Eagles. Lindsey Luce led the team with seven blocks, Ellen Paddock totaled 19 digs and three aces, and Kerri McHale distributed 22 assists.
Cortland trailed 17-8 in the first set and was still down 23-17 after a Jordan Thompson kill. The Red Dragons, however, went on an 8-1 run, to take the lead. The run started with two kills by Owens and a block by Owens and Moran. Down 24-21, Cortland used a Moran kill, a block by Moore and Moran, and a kill by Moore to tie the set, and a Brockport error gave the Red Dragons a 25-24 lead and set point. Following a timeout, however, Brockport tied the set on a kill by Luce, took the lead on a Coyle kill, and won the set on a Cortland attack error.
Brockport led 10-8 in the second before scoring five straight points to go up 15-8. Cortland got to within four points on a few occasions and eventually within three at 24-21 before Coyle's kill ended the set. In a tight third set, Cortland led 17-16 before stringing together four straight points on kills by Van Pelt and Southcott and two Brockport errors. The Golden Eagles clawed back to within 21-20, but Cortland scored the final four points on a service error, a Southcott kill, a Brockport attack error, and a block by
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman).
Cortland trailed 17-10 in the fourth but scored six straight to cut its deficit to one. Brockport, however, scored the next four points to take a 21-16 lead and stretched the lead to 24-18 on a Mastro kill and two Cortland errors. The Red Dragons fought off two match points on a service error and a Moran kill before Mastro's kill gave Brockport the victory.
Brockport finished the match with a .172 team attack percentage, including a .237 mark in the fourth set. Cortland ended at .096 for the match, including a .194 mark in the third set.
