Cortland Loses in Double OT at Geneseo in SUNYAC Field Hockey Final

GENESEO, N.Y. – Erin Nolan scored off a redirect on a penalty corner play 1:43 into the second overtime period as top-seeded Geneseo defeated second-seeded Cortland, 4-3, in the championship game of the SUNYAC field hockey tournament.

Geneseo (19-2) earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs with the win. Cortland (16-4) will await a possible, but probably unlikely, NCAA at-large berth. The game was Cortland's 10th overtime contest of the season; the Red Dragons had won the previous nine.

Cortland goalie Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) made a career-high 20 saves. Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) scored twice and Alanie Genter (Saratoga Springs) scored her first goal of the season. D'Amico, Burchell and Sara Reardon (Little Falls) were Cortland's representatives on the SUNYAC all-tournament team. Reardon scored the game-winning goal in Cortland's double-overtime semifinal win versus New Paltz Wednesday.

Nolan, who was named tournament MVP, finished with two goals for the Knights. Julia Kim and Haley Clark – both all-tourney selections - each scored once and Natalie Chojnacki made three saves. Geneseo outshot Cortland, 43-10, and held an 18-4 advantage in penalty corners. Jordan Penkitis assisted on two goals and joined Nolan, Kim and Clark on the all-tournament team.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead on Genter's goal, off a rebound during a penalty corner, early in the second quarter and Burchell's blast from about five yards out midway through the third quarter.

Geneseo came back with three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead. Kim scored on a 9-yard shot through traffic with 4:55 left in the third and Clark tied the game 4:13 into the fourth when she knocked in a rebound during a penalty corner play. Nolan's goal, off a Maggie Phipps assist, gave the hosts the lead with 7:19 left in regulation.

Cortland did not have many offensive chances in the second half but made the most of them. The Red Dragons earned a penalty corner with about six minutes left, and during the ensuing play Cortland was awarded a penalty stroke when Geneseo was called for covering the ball. Burchell buried the stroke the tie the game.

Geneseo had a 10-1 advantage in shots during overtime. The Knights were assessed a yellow card with 20 seconds left in the first overtime, but despite being down a player still earned a penalty corner early in the second overtime. Penkitis took a shot during the corner that Nolan redirected in for the game winner.
