Demitreus Henry finished second at 174 pounds to lead eight Red Dragon placewinners
WILKES-BARRE, PA. – Eight Cortland wrestlers earned top-six finishes, led by
Demitreus Henry's (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) second-place finish at 174 pounds, to help the Red Dragons finish in fourth place at the 12-team King's College Ned McGinley Invitational.
Roger Williams won the team title with 150 points, followed by York (Pa.) with 115.5, Springfield with 104 and Cortland with 95. Penn College (90.5) and Muhlenberg (83.5) rounded out the top half of the field.
Henry went 3-1 at 174 pounds with a technical fall and major decision. He won, 10-7, in the semifinals versus Brett Leonard of Roger Williams before losing, 5-1, to York's Jackson Drum in the finals.
Lucas Pincus (Valley Stream/Hewlett) finished third at 141 pounds with a 3-1 mark that included a pin and a technical fall.
Gianno Silba (Newark Valley) and
Cahal Donovan (Marietta/Marcellus) placed third and fourth, respectively, at 157 pounds, each with 4-1 records. Three of Silba's wins came via pin, while Donovan recorded a pin, technical fall and major decision. Donovan medically forfeited to Silba in the third-place match.
Ben Bivar (Noblesville, IN/Bainbridge-Guilford (NY)) and
Chandler Merwin (Walton) turned in fifth and sixth place finishes, respectively, at 149 pounds. Bivar went 5-2 with a pin and Merwin was 4-2 with two pins. They were scheduled to meet in the fifth-place match, but Merwin had already wrestled six actual times on the day and was not allowed to continue, while Bivar had only wrestled on the mat five times due to two medical forfeit wins. As a result, Bivar was awarded fifth place due to the "no contest."
Jeremy Pond (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) went 5-1 at 141 pounds for a sixth-place finish and
Zach Herbert (Sparta, NJ) was 4-2 at 285 pounds and also placed sixth. Pond had a pin and a major decision among his victories, but had to stop after his sixth match of the day. Herbert registered a technical fall and a major decision on the day, but also had to stop after his sixth match.
Four other Red Dragons posted three or more wins on the day but did not place.
Amos Rivera (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) was 4-2 with a pin, technical fall and major decision at 133 pounds.
Carter Baron (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) finished 3-2 with a pin and major decision at 157 pounds.
Charlie Buckley (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) and
Alex Leone (North Salem/Carmel) each went 3-2 at 165 pounds, with one of Buckley's wins coming by pin.
Cortland returns to action on Friday and Saturday at the Roger Williams Invitational in Bristol, R.I.
