CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's swimming and diving team finished first out of eight schools at the Snow Flurries Invitational, hosted by the Red Dragons Friday and Saturday at Holsten Pool.
Cortland came out on top of a tightly contested team race with 691.5 points. Fredonia was second at 644.5 points, barely edging third-place Oswego (644). Brockport (539), Oneonta (502), Buffalo State (329), Potsdam (185) and Sarah Lawrence (182) rounded out the field.
Nick Galeto (West Islip) earned two of Cortland's three individual event victories during the meet. He captured the 100-yard backstroke in 54.05 seconds and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:00.63. He also placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle (22.83).
Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.37 and finished third in the 400-yard IM (4:36.92).
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) registered three top-three finishes. He was second in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.50) and 1,650-yard freestyle (17:03.43) and placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.91).
Billy Donlevy (Bayside/Holy Cross) finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.13) and sixth in the 400-yard IM (4:42.21) and
Josh Chamak (New City/Clarkstown North) was fourth in the 400-yard IM (4:37.94) and seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.54).
Noah Farmer (New Hartford) recorded a fifth-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.80).
Aiden Poli (Cortland/Home schooled) was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (57.44) and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (49.73).
Ian Murray (Moravia/Southern Cayuga) finished sixth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.80). Other individual highlights included a pair of seventh-place finishes by
Tom Ryan (Long Beach) in the 100-yard backstroke (57.46) and 200-yard backstroke (2:11.50) and seventh-place efforts by
Alex Fisher (Smithtown/Hauppauge) in the 200-yard IM (2:06.63) and
Pat Calhoun (Oneonta) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.05).
Cortland finished in the top four in five relays. Galto,
Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park), Donlevy and Poli were second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:42.01) and Poli, Galeto, Bernhardt and Rokos finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:19.70).
Poli, Cornelia, Donlevy and Rokos finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.29). Fisher, Chamak, Rokos and Bernhardt were fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:32.08), while Ryan, Farmer, Rokos and Bernhardt placed fourth in the 400-yard medley relay (3:48.87).
Cortland returns to action on January 4 when it hosts Hartwick in a dual meet.
