Cortland hosted Ithaca in both wrestling and gymnastics in its "Beauty and the Beast" event for the second time in three years
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Ithaca College defeated SUNY Cortland in both wrestling and women's gymnastics duals during the schools' "Beauty and the Beast" event that featured the two sports competing simultaneously at Corey Gymnasium. Ithaca's nationally sixth-ranked wrestling squad defeated the Red Dragons, 36-6, and the Bombers' gymnastics team posted a 189.925-187.125 victory.
The combination event was held between the schools for the third straight year. It was billed last year as "Rumble and Tumble" at Ithaca and as "Beauty and the Beast" at Cortland in 2017. Cortland also hosted a Beauty and the Beast event in 2015 with the gymnasts facing Southern Connecticut State and the wrestlers competing versus Oswego.
Ithaca won the combined "Beauty and the Beast" team trophy by a 15-7 score under a system that awarded one point for each wrestling win and one point for each top-three individual event gymnastics finish.

Ithaca won eight matches, including two by pin and three by major decision, to improve to 11-4 on the season. Cortland closes its dual schedule with a 7-7 mark.
Cortland's wins came from
Alex D'Angelo (Thiells/North Rockland) by a 10-3 decision at 141 pounds and from

The Red Dragons lost close battles at two other weight classes. At 149 pounds,

Murphy, however, got an escape to start the third and then recorded a takedown and four-point near fall to go up 10-8 with 1:25 left. Pond escaped with 35 seconds left but was unable to register the go-ahead takedown and lost 10-9. At 165 pounds,
Demitreus Henry (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) held a 4-2 lead midway through the second period, but the Bombers' Austin Whitney answered with a takedown to tie it and took the lead on a two-point near fall late in the second in a 6-4 decision.
Ithaca's two pins came from ranked wrestlers. Jake Ashcraft, ranked first nationally at 184 pounds, earned a pin in 1:56 and Jake O'Brien, ranked fifth at 285 pounds, recorded his pin 4:18 into the final match.
Cortland is scheduled to send wrestlers to the Muhlenberg College Northeast/Mideast Futures Tournament on Sunday. The Red Dragons will compete at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals in Brockport Feb. 23-24.
