Season Ends with Setback at Potsdam; Modica Sets Save Record

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Potsdam men's hockey team score the final five goals of the game and earned a 5-2 victory versus Cortland Saturday night in the season finale for both teams. The Red Dragons fell to 9-16 overall and 3-13 in the SUNYAC. The Bears finished at 8-16-1 and 4-11-1.

Junior goalie Nick Modica (Suffern/New Jersey Hitmen) made 36 saves for Cortland, giving him 852 for the season. He eclipsed the program single-season record of 832 previously set by John Larnerd during the 2002-03 campaign.

Junior Stefano Alonzi (King City, ON/Burlington Cougars) netted both of the Red Dragons' goals. Junior Connor Beck (Richmond Hill, ON/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) and freshmen Shane Beaulieu (Brooklin, ON/Powassan VooDoos), Mike Sciore (Syracuse/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Ethan Homitz (Allison Park, PA/New Hampshire Monarchs) each registered an assist.

Jack Bloem recorded a hat trick to lead the Bears. Rob Clerc and Nate Zweig each added a goal, Brett Horn contributed three assists, Joseph Richardson had two assists and three others chipped in with one assist apiece. Goalie Nate Skidmore turned aside 21 shots.

After a scoreless first period, Alonzi netted a power-play goal at 7:38 of the second period on a one-time shot from the right side and added his fourth goal of the season from the slot at 14:12 on a one-timer inside the left post. Zweig cut the Cortland lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal at 18:00.

Bloem made it a 2-2 game just 53 seconds into the third period and netted what proved to be the game-winner at 5:24. Clerc put the Bears ahead, 4-2, at the 7:18 mark, and Bloem finished off his hat trick at 13:57 for the 5-2 final.
