BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cortland men's swimming and diving team is in second place out of nine schools after the first full day of competition at the 2019 SUNYAC Championships at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Geneseo leads the standings with 341 points and Cortland is second with 188. The pack is tight after the Red Dragons with Oswego in third at 175, followed by Fredonia (142), Oneonta (137), Brockport (128) and New Paltz (114) covering spots three through seven. Buffalo State (88) and Potsdam (58) round out the field with two days of competition remaining.

Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park),
Adam Kirchgessner (West Irondequoit) and
Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) finished second in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:27.96. In the 800-yard freestyle relay – the lone men's event conducted on Wednesday – the combination of
Tim Rokos (Duanesburg), Boyko,
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) and Galeto placed fourth in 7:05.51. Cortland also earned a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Kirchgessner,
Tim Thatcher (Staten Island/St. Peter's Boys),
Bailey Eigbrett (Avon) and
Eric Kohlhoff (West Islip) were clocked in 1:26.02.
Bernhardt and
Noah Farmer (New Hartford) earned Cortland's top individual finishes in Thursday's action. Bernhardt was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.61 (4:48.45 prelims) and Farmer was fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.42). Rokos placed seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.44, 1:59.42 prelims) and Kohlhoff finished eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (21.57).
Galeto won the "B" final in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.78) for a ninth-place overall finish, followed by Boyko in 10th place (4:49.29) and
John Severs (Suffern) in 16th place (4:52.95). Cornelia and
Alex Fisher (Smithtown/Hauppauge) placed 10th and 11th, respectively, in the 200-yard individual medley – Cornelia in 1:59.01 and Fisher in 1:59.68. Kirchgessner was 12th in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.73 seconds.
Patrick Conway (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) finished ninth in 1-meter diving at 424.10 points, missing NCAA regional qualifying by less than a point. Conway will have another shot at qualifying for regionals on Saturday in the 3-meter competition; he'll need a score of 440 points in that event to qualify.
