Kelly Davey, Alana Szewczyk, Julia Torell and Marissa Kordal after breaking the school record in the 400-yard medley relay
BUFFALO, N.Y. –
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) broke two individual Cortland school records and was part of a record-setting relay team during the first full day of competition at the 2019 SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The event is being held at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College and will continue Friday and Saturday.
Cortland is in second place in the nine-team event after Thursday's action with 176 points. Geneseo leads with 434 points, followed by Cortland, New Paltz (148), Oswego (147), Oneonta (126), Brockport (112), Fredonia (96), Potsdam (79) and Buffalo St. (64).
Davey set the school record in the 50-yard freestyle with her preliminary time of 23.41 seconds that was briefly tied for the SUNYAC record in the event with Geneseo's Deidra Osula, who also hit that time in prelims. Osula, however, broke the conference record again with her winning time of 23.35 seconds in the finals, while Davey finished second at 23.48 seconds. The previous school record was 23.53 seconds by Sarah Culmo in 2013.
Davey teamed with
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland),
Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) and
Marissa Kordal (Eden) to break the school record in the 400-yard medley relay to close Thursday's schedule. The Red Dragons' second-place time of 3:55.18 broke the previous school mark of 3:56.78 accomplished by Krista Bergquist, Taylor Houseman, Abigail MacDonald and Kristin Barnoski in 2010. During the relay, Davey also broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke with her leadoff time of 57.98 seconds, eclipsing MacDonald's time of 59.23 seconds from 2013.
Cortland also finished second in two other relays.
Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint), Davey, Torell and Kordal were runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:36.54, and during an abbreviated schedule on Wednesday the quartet of
Kailyn Anselment (Moreau/Glens Falls),
Vanessa Vegder (Dansville), Kordal and Davey finished second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:52.39).
Three Red Dragons, in addition to Davey, earned top-eight individual finishes during the opening days of competition.
Taylor Williams (Middletown/Minisink Valley) finished fifth in 3-meter diving with 437.85 points (454.40 prelims). The score is an NCAA regional qualifying mark, although Williams had already qualified for regionals with performances earlier in the season. Kordal finished sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.10) and Miller was seventh in the 50-yard freestyle (24.67).
Anselment was the "B" final winner in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:17.35 for a ninth-place overall finish.
Isabelle French (Centerport/Harborfields) was 12th in that race in 5:25.46. Vegder placed 15th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.90) and
Morgan Boone (Rome/Notre Dame) was 15th in Wednesday's 3-meter diving competition at 274.60 points (289.20 prelims).
