Nick Galeto Wins SUNYAC Title in 100-Yard Backstroke With School-Record Effort

Nick Galeto stands atop the podium after winning the 100-yard backstroke title in a school-record 51.36 seconds
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Nick Galeto (West Islip) won the 100-yard backstroke with a school-record performance and led off Cortland's third-place 200-yard medley relay team to highlight the Red Dragons' efforts during the second full day of competition at the SUNYAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Cortland is in a tight battle for second and third place with Oswego in the team standings. The Lakers are second with 347 points, with Cortland third at 346. Geneseo is leading the competition with 624 points. New Paltz (218), Fredonia (213), Oneonta (206), Brockport (196), Buffalo St. (139) and Potsdam (110) round out the field. The final day of competition will be Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.

Galeto, who was second in the 100-yard backstroke at last year's championship, claimed the league title this year with a school-record time of 51.36 seconds. The previous school mark was 51.38 seconds by Dylan Burns in 2015. Galeto, Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park), Adam Kirchgessner (West Irondequoit) and Eric Kohlhoff (West Islip) placed third in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:35.13.

The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Galeto earns first-team honors with his victory, and the relay qualifies for third-team recognition.

Five other Red Dragons swam in Friday night's finals to earn top-eight finishes. Kirchgessner was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (51.77), Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) was fifth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:13.65), Cornelia placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.21, 58.56 prelims), Thomas Ryan (Long Beach) was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (54.36), and Noah Farmer (New Hartford) ended eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.62).

Cortland also had numerous swimmers compete in the consolation finals to pick up team points. Bailey Eigbrett (Avon) was 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (53.57) and Alex Fisher (Smithtown/Hauppauge) placed 11th in the 400-yard IM (4:19.84), with Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) finishing 12th in that event at 4:22.00 (4:18.71 prelims). Billy Donlevy (Bayside/Holy Cross) turned in a 12th-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (53.88) and Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) was 13th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.09).

Tim Thatcher (Staten Island/St. Peter's Boys) earned 14th-place honors in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.31) and Pat Calhoun (Oneonta) was 15th in the 100-yard butterfly (55.69). Alex Regna (Brockport) scored points in both the 100-yard breaststroke (15th place, 1:02.47) and the 400-yard IM (16th place, 4:26.08) and Josh Chamak (New City/Clarkstown North) tallied points in the 100-yard backstroke (15th place, 56.48, 55.46 prelims) and 200-yard freestyle (16th place, 1:50.91, 1:47.73 prelims).
