CORTLAND, N.Y. – Oswego won seven straight matches to overcome an early deficit and the Lakers defeated the Red Dragons, 26-15, in dual-match action at Corey Gymnasium. Cortland is now 7-6 after the loss and Oswego evened its record at 7-7.
Cortland held a 9-0 lead after
Ben Lloyd's (Woodbridge, VA/Forest Park) forfeit win at 125 pounds and
Matt Maquet's (Long Beach) 10-3 decision at 133 pounds.
Oswego used a technical fall by Bryan Coll at 141, a decision by Rocco Russo at 149 and a 12-3 major decision by Christian Gramuglia at 157 to go up 12-9. Trevor Hoffmeir won at 165 and Troy Seymour earned his 100th career victory with an 11-2 major decision a 174 to extend the lead. The Lakers sealed the win with a 3-1 decision by Jeff Lombardi at 184 and a 10-0 major decision by Ricardo Dawkins at 197. Lombardi's win came after he posted a reversal with 1:45 left and added a point for riding time.
Zach Herbert (Sparta, NJ) earned Cortland's final points with a pin in 2:02 at 285 pounds. Cortland also won two of the night's three exhibition matches - a technical fall by Lloyd and a 3-2 decision by
Matt Norris (Homer).
Cortland returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Ithaca at 6:30 p.m. as part of the annual "Beauty and the Beast" event that will also feature Cortland's women's gymnastics team hosting the Bombers.
