CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's swimming and diving team defeated visiting Fredonia, 151-131, to close the regular-season portion of its schedule. The Red Dragons registered the fastest times in 10 individual events and one relay during the meet at Holsten Pool.
Ian Murray (Moravia/Southern Cayuga) earned two of Cortland's wins with victories in the 100-yard backstroke (55.29) and 200-yard backstroke (2:03.20).
Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park) won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.93) and was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.09).
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) was the 500-yard freestyle winner (4:57.46) and was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.84).
Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:39.79) and
Nick Galeto (West Islip) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.49).
Billy Donlevy (Bayside/Holy Cross) claimed top honors in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.49) and
Eric Kohlhoff (West Islip) won the 100-yard freestyle (49.66). Cortland also picked up exhibition wins by
Adam Kirchgessner (West Irondequoit) in the 100-yard butterfly (54.05) and
Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) in the 400-yard individual medley (4:28.44).
Cortland opened with a sweep of the top two spots in the 400-yard medley relay.
Thomas Ryan (Long Beach),
Noah Farmer (New Hartford), Donlevy and Rokos won in 3:41.44, with Murray, Cornelia,
Pat Calhoun (Oneonta) and
Bailey Eigbrett (Avon) very close behind in 3:41.58.
The Red Dragons claimed the top three places in three different events. In the 200-yard butterfly, Donlevy's win was followed by Calhoun in second (2:07.83) and Kirchgessner in third (2:10.24). The 200-yard freestyle featured Galeto in first, Bernhardt in second and
Tim Thatcher (Staten Island/St. Peter's Boys) in third (1:51.58). And in the 200-yard backstroke, Murray was followed to the wall by
Jon Manwarren (Norwich) in second (2:05.17) and Ryan in third (2:06.67).
Other highlights include second-place finishes by Farmer in the 100-yard backstroke (57.87),
John Severs (Suffern) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.66), and
Patrick Conway (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) in both diving events (252.20 points on 1-meter, 215.65 points on 3-meter). The Red Dragons also had the second fastest time as an exhibition entry in the 200-yard freestyle relay with
Bailey Eigbrett (Avon), Thatcher, Kohlhoff and
Brady Stein (Portville) finishing in 1:29.82.
Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships Feb. 20-23 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
