Taylor Williams and Patrick Conway, shown competing during Day 1 of the NCAA Regionals
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshman
Taylor Williams (Middletown/Minisink Valley) finished ninth out of 25 competitors on the 1-meter board during Day 2 of the NCAA Division III Northeast South Diving Regional and is the region's first alternate for the NCAA Division III Championships.
Sophomore
Patrick Conway (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) finished in 19th place out of 22 divers on the 3-meter board during Saturday's competition.
Williams finished with a score of 388.90 points. She posted a run of three straight dives between the fifth and seventh rounds of higher than 44 points, followed by a 41.40 on her eighth dive, but slipped to 39.60 in the ninth round and just a combined 58.40 points over her final two attempts.
Eight divers earned spots at nationals – the top four on 3-meter and top four on 1-meter in an alternating fashion, with divers skipped for the next finisher on a board if already chosen from the other board. After the eight qualifiers were picked, the next three divers on 3-meter had already earned spots, making Williams (who finished ninth on 3-meter Friday) the region's first national alternate. The NCAA Championships will be held March 20-23 in Greensboro, N.C.
Conway posted a score of 397.40 points on the 3-meter board. He averaged 36.13 points per dive, including a score of 52.80 on his final attempt with all of his scores on that dive ranging from 6.5 to 8.0.
