Kelly Davey All-American With 12th-Place NCAA Finish in 50-Yard Freestyle

Kelly Davey prepares for the start of the 50-yard freestyle consolation finals. Davey finished 12th nationally and is an honorable mention All-American.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Cortland junior Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 50-yard freestyle with a 12th-place finish during Day 1 of the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The four-day event is being held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Davey turned in the 11th-best time in Wednesday's preliminaries with a time of 23.44 seconds, just three tenths of a second off of her own school record (23.41) that she swam at the SUNYAC Championships. Davey's placement, in a field of 63 swimmers, earned her a spot into Wednesday night's consolation finals. The top eight swimmers advance to the finals, with spots 9-16 advancing to the consolation finals.

In her evening race, Davey placed fourth in 23.53 seconds to give her a 12th-place overall finish and five team points. Places 9-16 are recognized as honorable mention All-Americans. Sam Senczyszyn of Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the consolation final in 23.32 seconds and Fiona Muir of Emory was the national champion in 22.75 seconds.

Davey gives Cortland women's swimming and diving its fourth All-America placement over the last seven years. She is the first Red Dragon woman to earn All-America recognition in an individual swimming event since Sarah Culmo was an honorable mention All-American, also in the 50-yard freestyle, in 2013. The Red Dragons' more recent honorable mention All-America honors were earned by Miranda Fergus in 1-meter diving in both 2014 and 2016.

Davey is scheduled to compete in the 200-yard freestyle on Thursday, March 21, and the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday, March 23. Each day's schedule begins with prelims starting at 10 a.m., with the finals beginning at 6 p.m.
