ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Brian Corporan (Bronx/H.S. for Environmental Studies) and
Dan Schweitzer (Poughquag/Arlington) each recorded three hits and three RBI and
Jake Casey (Homer) allowed only one hit over four scoreless innings of relief for the win as Cortland defeated host Rochester, 15-1, in a non-league contest.
Cortland improves to 11-8-1 with the victory. The Red Dragons will host Oneonta in a three-game SUNYAC series this weekend with a single game Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at noon. Rochester's record evens at 6-6 with the loss.
Corporan finished 3-for-5 with a triple, double, walk, three RBI and a run and Schweitzer was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Colin BeVard drove in four runs and scored three times – he was 1-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Casey entered in the bottom of the third inning with runners on first and third and no outs and the Red Dragons leading 3-1. He got out of the jam with a strikeout-caught stealing double play, along with another strikeout, and he also retired the next seven batters he faced before allowing a one-out single in the sixth. He closed that inning with a strikeout and flyout to finish the day with one hit and no walks allowed and four strikeouts over four innings.
Chris Puzakulics (Vestal) started and gave up only one unearned run, but did give up two hits and two walks before being replaced by Casey. Three Cortland relievers each pitched on perfect inning to close the game.
Ryan Flansburg (Queensbury) struck out the side in the seventh,
Dan Hobbs (Saratoga Springs) struck out one batter in the eighth, and
Andrew Barnes (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) struck out the side in the ninth. In all, Cortland pitching recorded 11 strikeouts and only two walks and gave up three hits.
Garrett Renslow was Rochester's starter and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts in three innings. Steve Pickering and Aaron Craig each went 1-for-3 at the plate for the Yellowjackets.
Cortland led 1-0 in the first on a Schweitzer RBI single, but Rochester knotted the score in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded walk by David Rieth in an inning that featured two Cortland errors. BeVard drove in the tiebreaking run in the third on a grounder on which he also reached via error, with the other run in the inning coming via a
Wyatt Myers (Chittenango) RBI fielder's choice.
The Red Dragons broke the game open with six runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Mat Bruno (Rye) and BeVard each hit two-run singles and Schweitzer added a two-run double in the sixth. The runs in the seventh were created by a
Paul Franzese (Somers) RBI double, a
Scott Giordano (Croton-on-Hudson/Croton-Harmon) RBI single and a Corporan two-run triple, and Cortland closed the scoring in the ninth with a BeVard sac fly and a Corporan RBI double.
