CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland scored 11 goals in the first quarter and never looked back as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Potsdam, 22-3, in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.
The 11 goals are the most by the Red Dragons in a quarter since scoring 16 times in the opening quarter of a 30-0 win over Utica/Rome in 2002. Cortland (6-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) led only 4-2 midway through the first quarter before going on an 11-0 run over the next 15 minutes. The Red Dragons scored the last seven goals of the first and the first four of the second to take a 15-2 lead. Cortland was up 15-3 at halftime and outscored the Bears 7-0 in the second half.
Senior attack
Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields) became the 57th player in program history to reach the career 100-point mark. He finished the game with three goals and one assist and has career totals of 86 goals and 16 assists for 102 points.
Joey Panariello (Islip) led Cortland with four goals and two assists to match his career high with six points.
Dante Yacavone (Homer) matched his career high with three goals and added three assists, and
Dean Riley (Homer) added three goals and two assists.
Corey McMahon (Lindenhurst/St. John the Baptist) contributed two goals and one assist and
Jonathan Ecker (Ontario/Wayne) had a goal and a career-best three assists.
Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) registered a goal and a career-high two assists and
Tristan Moreno (Clarkstown/Clarkstown North) finished with a goal and an assist.
Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 12-of-18 faceoffs and picked up eight ground balls.
Dominick Natale (Homer) and
Kevin Tiedemann (Comsewogue) each had four ground balls.
Josh Huiatt (Lisbon/Hugh C. Williams) led Potsdam (2-5, 0-1 SUNYAC) with two goals and one assist and Sean Coe (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored once. Ethan Clark (Seven Valleys, PA/Spring Grove) led the Bears with four ground balls.
Jon Vargas (West Islip) started in goal for Cortland and made six saves over the first three quarters.
Marc Esposito (West Babylon) made one save and did not allow any goals in the fourth. Potsdam starting goalie Zach Sheridan (Clay/Cicero-North Syracuse) made four saves in 16:59 of action. Mike Nowak (Lockport) totaled six saves and allowed eight goals in 28:01 and Jack Corcoran (Camillus/West Genesee) stopped two shots and allowed two goals in the fourth.
Cortland will host nationally third-ranked RIT on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m.
