Cortland Splits Pair of Pitching Duels at Geneseo; Sunday DH at Brockport Postponed

GENESEO, N.Y. – Cady Walts (Cortland) threw a four-hit shutout and Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth as Cortland defeated Geneseo, 2-0, in the second game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. Geneseo won the opener, 1-0, behind Taylor Moore's five-hit shutout.

Cortland's scheduled doubleheader at Brockport on Sunday has been postponed due to the weather with no makeup date announced yet. The Red Dragons (14-11, 6-2 SUNYAC) will host Ithaca in a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Geneseo 1, Cortland 0

The rematch of last year's SUNYAC tournament finals, which Geneseo won, opened with a pitching duel between Moore and Cortland's Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford). Moore allowed five hits and one walk and struck out four in seven innings. Van Dorn gave up seven hits, one walk and one run and fanned three batters in six innings.

Geneseo scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the second. Taylor Fedor and Moore led off the inning with singles and Kylie Papagelos bunted the runners to second and third. Brooke Wolff singled to drive in Fedor, although Cortland was able to throw out Moore trying to score on the play to keep the score at 1-0.

Cortland was only able to get one runner into scoring position versus Moore. Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) led off the fourth with an infield single and moved to second on Cailey Cuttita's (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) sac bunt. Hoyt advanced to third on a groundout, but Moore struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Hoyt finished 2-for-3 and Alyssa Finno (Kingston) was 1-for-2 for Cortland. Ashlyn Kersch ended 2-for-3 and Wolff was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Geneseo.

Cortland 2, Geneseo 0 (8 inn.)

Pitching was once again the story as Walts improved to 8-2 on the season after allowing four hits and three walks and striking out seven over eight scoreless innings. Geneseo (21-7, 9-3 SUNYAC) countered with a complete game from Kersch, who gave up seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts over eight frames.

Cortland opened the top of the eighth with a Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) single to left. The Red Dragons fouled out on a bunt attempt for the first out, but Feldman followed by ripping a two-run homer to left center for her sixth round-tripper of the season. In the bottom of the eighth Danni Napoli doubled with two outs to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but Walts got the next hitter to ground out to end the game.

Cortland had runners on first and second with one out in the second before a lineout double play ended the inning, and the Red Dragons got a runner to third in the fourth but couldn't capitalize. Walts escaped a first-and-second jam in the first and a runner on third in the sixth, each time inducing a pop-up to short to end the inning.

O'Gorman and Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) each finished 2-for-4 and Feldman was 1-for-3 with a walk and her two-run homer for Cortland. Napoli went 2-for-2 with a walk to lead the Knights.
