Cortland on Both Ends of Shutouts vs. Visiting Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) tossed an eight-hit shutout as Cortland defeated Fredonia, 4-0, in the opening game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. The Blue Devils returned the favor in the second game as Sam Seegar twirled a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory to earn the split.

Cortland (17-12, 9-3 SUNYAC) is currently tied for first place, with Geneseo, in the SUNYAC standings. The Red Dragons will host Buffalo State on Saturday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader – the start time has been pushed back from its original noon scheduled start to hopefully avoid forecasted bad weather.

Cortland 4, Fredonia 0

Van Dorn evened her record at 7-7 on the season with the win. She struck out one and walked one. Fredonia starter Katie Yudin gave up five hits and four runs, one earned, over five innings. She fanned four batters and walked three.

The fourth inning proved to be crucial for both teams. Fredonia loaded the bases in the top of the first with one out on a Megan Maull single, an Eva FitzSimmons hit by pitch, a passed ball and a Cassie Herman walk. Maddy O'Heir followed with a single up the middle that appeared to give the Blue Devils the lead, but Fitzsimmons at second was called out for colliding with the Cortland shortstop and Maull was sent back to third on the dead ball. Van Dorn got the next batter to ground out to end the inning.

Cortland then proceeded to score all four of its runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) walked and Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) beat out a bunt single to move pinch runner Kiley Besko (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) to second. An error one out later loaded the bases and Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) singled through the left side to drive in a run. Another error with two outs allowed two runs to score, and Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) closed the scoring with an RBI single to left.

Fredonia loaded the bases in the seventh on a Nicole Kumro one-out infield single and two-out singles by Karli Murray and Sydney Merkley. Van Dorn preserved the win and the shutout after a fielder's choice grounder resulted in a game-ending force at second.

Scharff went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and O'Gorman was 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI for the Red Dragons. Murray hit safely in three of four at-bats and Merkley was 2-for-4 for the Blue Devils.

Fredonia 3, Cortland 0

Seegar and FitzSimmons were the stars for Fredonia (11-17, 6-6 SUNYAC) in the nightcap. Seegar allowed only three baserunners on a one-out Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) double in the fourth, a two-out error in the fifth and a one-out double by Hoyt in the seventh. A lineout to second resulted in a double play to end the game. Seegar finished with two strikeouts and no walks in her two-hit shutout.

FitzSimmons drove in all three of Fredonia's runs. Murray led off the game with a walk and, with two outs, FitzSimmons hit a two-run homer to left. Murray also walked to lead off the top of the seventh, moved to second on a Merkley sac bunt, took third on a groundout and scored on FitzSimmons' RBI single to left.

FitzSimmons finished 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI and Yudin was 2-for-4. Cady Walts (Cortland) went the distance in the circle for Cortland and gave up three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
