CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 20th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team used a strong second-half performance to guide its way to a 21-11 victory over Oneonta Tuesday afternoon in SUNYAC action at the Stadium Complex. With the win, the hosting Red Dragons improved to 10-5 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The visiting Red Dragons fell to 8-8 and 4-4.
Junior
Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) led Cortland with a career-high nine points, which included three goals and a career-high six assists. Juniors
Brie Yonge (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) and
Molly Newton (Skaneateles) each recorded five points in the victory. Senior
Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored four goals for Cortland. Sophomores
Emily Goebel (Penfield) and
Paige Hommel (East Islip/St. John the Baptist) scored two goals apiece.

Cecilia Procopio (Syracuse/West Genesee) added to Cortland's scoring efforts with a goal and two assists. Junior
Baylee Ojeda (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and freshman
Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) each chipped in with a goal for the host Red Dragons. Sophomore
Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and freshman
Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) each added one assist, with Squillini's being the first of her career.

Annie Casey (Bay Shore) started in goal for Cortland, making one save in her 39:41 of playing time. Sophomore
Paige Potter (Cortland) entered the game with 20:19 remaining and stopped every shot she faced, ending the game with four saves. Meager caused three turnovers, won six draw controls and scooped up three ground balls, and
Catie Fleming (North Massapequa/Farmingdale) recorded one caused turnover and two ground balls.
Sophomore Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem) paced Oneonta's offense with five goals. Sophomore Lily Avazis (Port Washington/Schreiber) tallied two goals, and junior Victoria Varone (Commack) and sophomore Maggee Sheridan (Warwick) each picked up a goal and an assist. Varone also won 10 draw controls, while junior goalie Lexi Keen (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) turned aside 12 shots and recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior goalie Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach) replaced Keen for the final 14:56 of the game and recorded five saves.
The visiting Red Dragons got off to a hot start and found themselves up 6-3 over Cortland with 16:01 remaining the first half. Cortland tied the game at 6-6 nearly eight minutes later and would gain an 11-8 lead at halftime. The hosting Red Dragons tried to pull away from Oneonta early in the second half, but Oneonta stuck around and trailed by four goals with 20 minutes remaining. However, Cortland pulled away and scored the final six goals of the game to earn a 21-11 victory.
Cortland outshot Oneonta, 38-16, in the game and held a 25-19 advantage in ground balls. Cortland also neared perfection on clears, going 22-of-23 on the day.
