Cortland Wraps Up Regular Season with 19-7 Win vs. Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Joey Panariello (Islip) recorded career highs of eight points and seven goals and the Cortland defense held Oswego scoreless for a stretch of 27 minutes, 59 seconds spanning the first to third quarters as the Red Dragons closed out their regular season with a 19-7 victory versus the Lakers Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC action at the Stadium Complex.

Cortland improved to 12-4 overall with its six consecutive win and 6-0 in conference play. The Red Dragons will host a team to be determined in the conference semifinals on Wednesday, May 1. Oswego dropped to 7-5 and 2-3 and can still earn a SUNYAC playoff spot with one game remaining.

Ten different players netted at least one goal for Cortland, led by Panariello's seven, five of which came in the opening half. Freshman Dante Yacavone (Homer) tallied three goals and one assist, and junior Corey McMahon (Lindenhurst/St. John the Baptist) recorded two goals and one assist.

Sophomore Anthony LaRosa (East Meadow) contributed one goal and one assist for the Red Dragons, while seniors Alex Waelder (Syracuse/Corcoran) and Mike McNaney (Marcellus), junior Tristan Moreno (Clarkstown/Clarkstown North), sophomore Mike Nicholson (North Babylon/St. Anthony's) and freshmen Troy Morris (Long Beach) and Kyle Boden (Wading River/Shoreham-Wading River) each added a goal. Senior Dean Riley (Homer) produced four assists.

Freshman Marc Esposito (West Babylon) started in goal for Cortland, making nine saves in 49:44. Junior Jon Vargas (West Islip) played the final 10:16, registering two stops. Junior Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 17-of-25 faceoffs and secured eight ground balls. Panariello collected five ground balls, and Nicholson scooped up four.

Senior Bobby Emerson (Lake Grove/Centereach) paced Oswego's offense with four goals. Junior Tim Schof (Montgomery/Pine Bush) scored twice, and junior Dan Doolan (Lake Grove/Sachem North) netted a goal. Junior Evan Hollfelder (Hamburg) registered three assists, and sophomore Brian Rowe (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) added two assists.

Sophomore goalie Kevin O'Donnell (Cleveland, OH/Saint Edward) turned aside 20 shots and collected three ground balls for the Lakers. Junior Brendon Closs (Albany/Shaker) caused three turnovers, while sophomore Seamus Burns (West Sayville/Sayville) recorded three ground balls.

Oswego took and early 2-1 lead on a pair of goals from Schof. The Red Dragons, however, took control of the game with an 11-goal run that stretched into the third quarter. Cortland led, 6-2, after the first quarter and outscored Oswego, 5-0, in the second quarter for an 11-2 advantage at the break.

Fifty-three seconds into the third quarter, Yacavone stretched the lead to 12-2 before Emerson stopped the Laker drought with a man-up goal at 12:01. Four more goals from the Red Dragons pushed the lead to 16-3, and Cortland took a 16-4 advantage into the final 15 minutes of play, where each team netted three goals for the 19-7 final.
