Walts Strikes Out 13, Just Misses No-Hitter, in 2-0 Win vs. New Paltz

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Cady Walts (Cortland) threw a one-hit shutout with a career-high 13 strikeouts and came within one out of recording a no-hitter as Cortland (12-9, 5-1 SUNYAC) defeated visiting New Paltz, 2-0, in the second game of a conference doubleheader. New Paltz (16-7, 5-3 SUNYAC) won the opening game in nine innings, 4-1, after scoring the tying run in the top of the sixth and three runs in the top of the ninth.

Walts' 13 strikeouts are the most in a game by a Cortland pitcher since Katie Finch fanned 13 batters in a 1-0 win at New Paltz on April 3, 2010. Finch holds the school single-game strikeout record with 19 in a 10-inning win over Buffalo State in 2009, while Stephanie Adamshick set the school record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game with 16 at SUNYIT in 2006.

Cortland will host St. John Fisher in a non-league doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m.

New Paltz 4, Cortland 1 (9 inn.)

The opening contest shaped up as a pitching duel between New Paltz freshman Katie Quagliana and Cortland's Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford). Quagliana, now 9-3, allowed seven hits and three walks over nine innings. Van Dorn gave up four runs, one earned, on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts in eight and two thirds innings.

Cortland scored in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single by Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). New Paltz had some early chances come up empty with a runner on second and one out in the first and a runner on third with two outs in the second, while the Red Dragons missed a chance at insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth after leaving runners on second and third.

New Paltz tied the game in the top of the sixth. Celia Santini led off with a pinch-hit single and advanced to third on the play due to a misplay in the outfield. Two batters later Taylor LaFrance hit an RBI single up the middle to knot the game at 1-1.

In the top of the ninth, Ashley Puig led off with a double (in SUNYAC regular-season games the tiebreaker rule isn't used until the 10th inning). Meagan Blair bunted her to third and Nikki Bowen hit an RBI single to put the Hawks ahead. Kelsey Trudden later drove in a run on a groundout that was nearly caught in the air at second, and Nina Simms doubled to right center to drive home the final run. Cortland got a one-out single from Alyssa Finno (Kingston) before a lineout double play ended the game.

Finno and Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) each went 2-for-4 for Cortland. Puig and Quagliana each were 2-for-4 for New Paltz.

Cortland 2, New Paltz 0

Walts, now 7-2 on the spring, allowed only two baserunners in her gem – a one-out walk to LaFrance in the fourth and a two-out clean single to center by Blair in the seventh. Walts finished the victory with a strikeout as the Hawks had the potential tying run at the plate. Walts struck out the side in the first and third innings and fanned two batters in both the sixth and seventh innings, along with one whiff in each of the other three frames.

Cortland scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third. Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) led off with a single and pinch runner Megan Weber (Lockport/Starpoint) moved to second on an Ashley Votta (Marlboro) sac bunt. With two outs and Weber on third, Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) pinch hit and tripled to right to drive in a run. An error on a grounder by Feldman brought home Caputo.

Caputo finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored. Emily Fox went the distance for New Paltz and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
