GENESEO, N.Y. – David Bernstein (Norwich) broke the school record and a facility record in the hammer throw to lead Cortland's performances at the SUNY Geneseo May Meet.

Bernstein easily won the event with a throw of 58.33 meters (191' 4"), breaking the previous school mark of 58.06 meters (190' 6") set by current Oneonta throws coach Mitch Couch in a national runner-up performance at the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. The Geneseo facility record was 55.28 meters by Oneonta's Pat Weinert in 2014. Bernstein currently ranks 13th nationally in Division III with his performance.

Tyler Hochadel (Hamburg/Frontier) also posted an AARTFC qualifying mark in the hammer at 48.44 meters (158' 11") to finish in eighth place.

Four Cortland hurdlers registered regional qualifying times – two in the 110-meter hurdles and two in the 400-meter hurdles. Storm Malone (Highland) won the 110 hurdles in 14.95 seconds. Malik Hinds (Bay Shore) was fifth in the prelims with a time of 15.52 seconds. Austen Johnson (Jamestown) placed third in the 400 hurdles in 55.10 seconds and Aidan Farrell (Bloomingburg/Pine Bush) was fifth in 56.60 seconds.

Cortland's other AARTFC qualifying effort came from the second-place 4x100-meter relay team of Peyton Lalone (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg Free Academy), Liam Joyce (Dryden), Brent DiVittorio (Brewster) and Chjuvaughn Cameron (Riverhead), which finished in 42.40 seconds.

Lalone won the 200-meter dash in 22.73 seconds, with Joyce placing third in 22.80 seconds. Hunter Braun (Victor) was the runner-up in the 800 meters (1:57.61) and Cameron finished third in the 100-meter dash (11.17).

Cortland will send some middle distance runners to a meet at Swarthmore Monday, and the Red Dragons will host the AARTFC Championships Wednesday and Thursday in the final meet prior to the NCAA Division III Championships.

Coach's Corner - Comments from Head Coach Steve Patrick:

We had some great results today at the Geneseo May Meet!  This is always a strange time of year, as our numbers have decreased drastically after the SUNYAC meet and we are about to start finals.

Both of our 4x100 relays showed some great things today – we didn't have the cleanest passes in either relay, but they showed that they are ready to drop a fast time.  It will be good to get a little more practice in this week to help make sure we get those things taken care of for the regional championships we are hosting this Wednesday and Thursday, as well as hopefully the at the NCAA Championships.

For the track, Maya Campbell continued to shine in her senior season, this time with a big PR in the 100 high hurdles.  It's great to see how well things are coming together for her!  Speaking of senior hurdlers running faster than they ever have,  both Austen Johnson and Aidan Farrell had lifetime bests in the 400 hurdles, which is very exciting!

In the 800 meters, freshman Hunter Braun had a great effort to earn a new PR, which is fantastic.  It was his last chance of the year in the 800, but he still has a chance to run the 1500 this week at the Regional meet.

While we've highlighted a lot of personal records, it's really cool to have a personal record that is also a new school record!  This week that is what sophomore David Bernstein did in the hammer throw, with a new best throw that was pretty dominant – he bested the field by over 20 feet, which is quite remarkable.  It was a pretty cool moment that the previous school record holder, Mitch Couch, was in attendance as he is now coaching the throws at Oneonta.

We have a few middle-distance athletes in action this Monday at Swarthmore, and then turn our focus to the Regional Championships that we host on Wednesday and Thursday at home.
