CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) threw a three-hit shutout and Cortland scored all of its run over its final two at-bats as the top-seeded Red Dragons opened the SUNYAC tournament with a 7-0 win over sixth-seeded Fredonia.
Cortland (25-13), the host of the six-team, double-elimination tournament – advances to face Oneonta on Friday at 9 a.m. Thursday's other first-day results included: Geneseo defeating Oswego, 5-0, behind an Ashlyn Kersch no-hitter; New Paltz beating Oneonta, 7-6, after scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth; and Oswego rallying past Fredonia, 4-3, with a three-run bottom of the sixth in an elimination game. Geneseo will face New Paltz in a winner's bracket game Friday at 11 a.m. and Oswego will play at 1 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
Van Dorn struck out three batters and did not walk anyone to improve to 12-7 on the season. She retired the final 14 batters she faced after allowing one hit in each of the first three innings. Sam Seegar started for Fredonia (13-23) and gave up four unearned runs on four hits with four walks in four and two thirds innings.
Cortland scored four times in the fifth on a
Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) RBI single, a
Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) two-run double and an error on an
Alyssa Finno (Kingston) grounder to second.
Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) increased the lead to 7-0 in the sixth with a three-run homer to left.
The Red Dragons failed to capitalize on two earlier scoring opportunities. Cortland had runners on second and third with one out in the third but hit into a double play where a runner was thrown out at home by the shortstop and another runner was then caught in a rundown between second and third. In the fourth a potential sac fly to left turned into a double play when Cortland's runner at third was called out for leaving too early on the tag up.
Karli Murray went 2-for-3 for Fredonia with singles in the first and third innings. The Blue Devils stranded runners on second base in the first and second frames.
