Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford), now 13-8, threw a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts and one walk and
Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) went 3-for-3 with a double, hit by pitch, two RBI and two runs scored as Cortland eliminated the fifth-seeded Lakers (19-21).
Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) homered and finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI.
Cortland scored single runs in four straight innings to take a 4-0 lead. In the second, Feldman walked and pinch runner
Megan Weber (Lockport/Starpoint) moved to second on an
Alyssa Finno (Kingston) bunt single, took third on a
Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) sac bunt, and scored on a passed ball to give Cortland a 1-0 lead. In the third, O'Gorman led off with a single and was bunted to second by
Taylor Felicello (Marlboro). O'Gorman went to third on a groundout and scored on an error during the play. Feldman homered just inside the right field foul pole to lead off the third and she singled home a run in the fourth.
The Red Dragons broke the game open with three runs in the sixth.
Jess Marsh (Wynantskill/Troy) singled and
Kiley Besko (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) walked with one out and O'Gorman hit a two-run double, followed by a Felicello run-scoring double.
Emily Knowlden doubled and walked and Claire Hewitt had a pinch-hit single in the seventh for the Lakers, who are coached by former Cortland player and assistant coach Abby Martin. Oswego ended in third place for the program's best-ever league tournament finish.
Cortland 7, Geneseo 3
Cady Walts (Cortland) went the distance for Cortland to improve to 14-4 on the year. She gave up six hits, including only two over the first six innings, struck out seven and walked none.
Cortland exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth to break a scoreless tie (Geneseo was the designated home team based on being undefeated in the tournament through two days). The Red Dragons had managed just one baserunner, on a
Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) third-inning single, through four innings versus Geneseo starter Ashlyn Kersch, but opened the fifth with consecutive singles by Feldman, Finno and Hoyt, the latter driving home pinch runner Weber for the game's first run.
Scharff reached on an error to load the bases and, with one out, O'Gorman and Felicello hit back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 3-0.
Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) emptied the bases with a three-run double to left center to finish the six-run outburst.
Cortland added a run in the top of the seventh as O'Gorman led off with a single, Felicello walked, Caputo bunted the runners up,
Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) walked, and Feldman hit a sac fly to right. O'Gorman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, Caputo was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice and three RBI, and Finno went 2-for-4.
Geneseo mounted a little bit of a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Kersch, who finished 3-for-3, led off with a single and Danni Napoli hit a homer to left center. Hannah Elmer doubled, Abbey Whitney singled, and pinch hitter Jasmine Petrishin drove in Elmer with a sac fly to center. Walts squelched the threat by getting a pop-up and a flyout to end the game.
Kersch allowed five hits and five runs, four earned, over four and a third innings and suffered just her third loss in 17 decisions this spring. Taylor Moore gave up two runs the rest of the way.
