CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team, in the debut of new head coach
Erin Glickert, split a pair of five-set matches to open play at the 12-team Red Dragon Classic at Corey Gymnasium. Cortland defeated Lebanon Valley College, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21, 24-26, 15-13, but had a two-set lead slip away in a 25-17, 27-25, 20-25, 24-26, 10-15 loss to Stockton University. Both matches lasted more than two hours.
The tournament, being held for the 35th consecutive year, continues Saturday with 12 matches. Cortland will face Baldwin Wallace at 10 a.m. and Canton at 12:30 p.m. Baldwin Wallace, Oneonta, St. Lawrence and Stockton are each currently 2-0 through one day of action.
Sophomore
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) led Cortland versus Lebanon Valley with 14 kills and just one error in 37 attempts. She also recorded 17 digs. Senior
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) finished with 13 kills and three blocks, sophomore
Maya Owens (Nyack) had 10 kills and sophomore
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) added eight kills. Freshman
Carly Haegele (Commack) led the Red Dragons with 30 digs and senior
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) dished out 31 assists.
In the match versus Stockton, Van Pelt paced Cortland with 15 kills, while Owens, Moore and Southcott each put down seven kills. Five Red Dragons had double-figure digs, led by Haegele with 19, Amelio with 16 and junior
Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) with 11. Senior
Gabby Fernandes (Islip) and senior
Malley Bowen (Tioga/Tioga Central) each had 10 digs.
Amelio registered 21 assists, followed by Bowen with 14. Junior Brigette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) and sophomore
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) led the team with six and five blocks, respectively.
