Cortland never trailed in the first set, but never really pulled away either. Scranton pulled within 21-20 on a Graham kill, but a service error made it 22-20 and Southcott followed with two kills. Bowen's service ace ended the set. The second set was also tight as Scranton was clinging to a 21-20 lead before extending the lead on two Cortland attack errors. A block by Moran and Owens made it 23-21 before Scranton wrapped the set with a Victoria Capogna kill and a Cortland attack error.
Cortland took early control in the third set with a 16-5 lead and led 20-9 before the guests mounted a small rally. Scranton got to within 22-15 and, after trailing 24-15, posted four straight points to close to 24-19 before a service error ended the set.
The Royals looked like they might force a fifth set after taking a 20-15 lead in the fourth. Trailing 21-17, Cortland went on a 6-0 run that featured a
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) kill, a Bowen ace, a Southcott kill and a block by Anderson and Owens. An error allowed Scranton to pull within one at 23-22, but Southcott's kill gave Cortland two match points. Scranton fought off the first on a Vitkus kill, but Cortland ended the set and the match on a kill by Owens.
Cortland will compete in a tournament at Swarthmore College this Friday and Saturday. The Red Dragons will face Rowan University of New Jersey and Redlands College of California on the first day and the host school along with Arcadia University Saturday.
