Cortland Rides Momentum of First-Set Rally in SUNYAC-Opening Sweep at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Cortland rallied from a 24-20 deficit to win the first set and the Red Dragons never looked back in a three-set sweep of host Oswego to open SUNYAC play. Cortland (11-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) won 27-25, 25-22, 25-14 to earn its eighth consecutive victory.

Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) and Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) led Cortland with 10 kills apiece. Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) finished with seven kills and no errors in 13 attempts for a .538 attack percentage and led the Red Dragons with four blocks, including two solo.

Malley Bowen (Tioga/Tioga Central) distributed 17 assists and added eight digs and a team-high three aces. Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) finished with 13 assists and five digs. Carly Haegele (Commack) led the Red Dragons with 19 digs, followed by Southcott with 12 and Moore with 10.

Oswego (8-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) was led by Melissa Lussier's 10 kills and Lauren Fie's eight kills. Emily Costa totaled 28 digs, with Lussier adding 15 and Shauna O'Flaherty 14. Julia Flohr had 28 assists and eight digs.

Down 24-20 in the first, Cortland scored four straight points on an Oswego error, a Maya Owens (Nyack) kill, a Haegele ace and a Moore kill. Oswego had its fifth set point following a kill by Sarah Massie, but Cortland tied the score at 25 on a Moore kill, then won the set on back-to-back kills by Moran and Moore.

The second set was tied each interval from 19-19 through 22-22 before Cortland scored the final three points. Nicole Van Pelt's (Montgomery/Valley Central) kill started the winning run, followed by an Amelio kill and an Oswego ball-handling error. Cortland took control midway through the third set and finished the match on a 12-4 run to pull away from a 13-10 lead.

Cortland's attack percentage improved each set, rising from .125 in the first to .229 in the second and .244 in the third to finish the night with an overall .191 mark. Oswego, conversely, had a .154 attack percentage in the first but dropped to .150 in the second and .083 in the third to finish at .129.

Cortland travels to Dallas, Pa., this weekend for the Misericordia University Cougar Clash. The Red Dragons face York (Pa.) and the host Cougars Friday and will play Valley Forge and Elizabethtown Saturday.
